Futon in the rear?
My Astro only has the middle bench seat, and not a rear seat. I want to be able to take 8 people around so was looking into picking up the rear seat. In the process I noticed that a lot of van conversions have a rear seat that will seat 3 people but will also fold down into a bed. I have not seen on...

Anyone know where I can get the fiberglass top for a diy project like this? Would be fun to try.

Re: The first diesel Astro conversion??.
Yeah...stick with a gas engine! If you want it to be quiet and shake free, a Cummins 4BT or any older style low pressure injection system won't provide this. If you want power, torque, quiet and smooth you will need to look at the new common rail high pressure injection diesels. Will these newer en...

Replacing the computer chip
I have a '96 and am wondering if replacing the chip in the computer will get me better gas mileage? If so, how much more? will this put additional stress on the engine?

changing rear ends?
I think the 96 vans have a 3.71 rear end. Has anyone ever put something around a 3.2 in it? What would be the effect on performance? gas mileage?

Re: The first diesel Astro conversion??.
I, too, am considering putting a diesel into an Astro. Several folks have mentioned the Cummins 4BT but there is one drawback. At idle the engines are noisy and shake badly. Given the size, weight and availability, however, they seem to be a good choice. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to d...

Newbie up in Portland Oregon
I am glad to be here! I am now the proud owner of a 1996 Chevy Astro van. I was originally going to buy something smaller and more fuel efficient but since I started driving the Astro I am glad I bought it. I feel safer in it than I did when I test drove the little guys. My steed is high mileage - a...
