Re: Plans for My Safari's Convertible Bed
I agree w/ Lifted here. Make your bed platform high enough to fit a standard tote under it. All my gear lives under my bed/rear seat. I can fit something like 6 totes of gear under there. I used the pull-out bench seat from a conversion van ($35 at the junk yard), but it only pulls out to 4'. I made...

Re: Limiting slip....
I followed the link to the Truetrac Site and it looks like a variant of torsen unit, almost a direct copy of the Quaife units. I have a Quaife in my SAAB 99 Turbo race car and it works very well however, if one wheel loses all traction, power will be sent to that wheel (eg., it's in the air). There ...

Re: So, how did this site come about and how is it different
I was also on the old AS.com forums as 99Super (my SAAB 99 racer) but I found as often as not that I'd get some snarky comment to my question rather than any help. I tried to be on that site after Austin took over but I didn't find any better results. I'm still learning a lot about these vans so I'l...

Re: Wipers acting flaky...
Thanks Capt!
I'll try that.
It seems as though when the wipers hit a certain position (usually around the "park" spot, but not always)), they just stop. If I wiggle them they restart, always. That might also explain the judder, too...

Re: AWD Engage/Defeat switch?
Being in the science community myself, I like looking at the way experiments are set up and the biases that are inherent to each experiment... Considering that the hump is unnecessary, and that they attempt to keep it off camera makes me suspicious. It makes me think they are purposely trying to bia...

Re: AWD Engage/Defeat switch?
It seems odd to me that they created a large hump of several inches for the rear wheels to drive over, just as the fronts reach the low traction area...

Re: Wipers acting flaky...
meterpig's question seemed a bit random, but I think he was responding to my comment about plywood and sheetrock. Through 88, all Astros had the shorter body w/ Chevy adding an "EXT" (extended body) option in 89. The shorty body was discontinued after 94, leaving only the full length bodie...

Re: some thoughts today
GM can build some pretty great products when they want to. Unfortunately, they tend to work on a product for years until they have perfected it, then when they finally do, they cancel it.

Re: some thoughts today
After using the snot out of this thing this summer, I agree!
Why did GM ever stop building these things?
A buddy of mine even ditched his VW Westphalia Synchro in favor of a 99 AWD!![cheers!](./images/smilies/smile_cheers.gif)

Wipers acting flaky...
Hey all! It's been a pretty busy year, using the 'stro to haul wood, drywall and insulation for my addition. It's been great! For a while now the wipers have been acting weird. Sometime they run smooth and normal, sometimes they "judder" when they run (like the windshield is dry when it's ...

Re: What did you do to/with your van today?
I replaced my cracked 5/8" core radiator and replaced it w/ a new 1" core radiator. Installed a cooler t-stat. Replaced the serpentine belt. I test drove it today in 97 degree heat w/ the A/C on while going up a very long grade and it stayed nice and cool! Looks like I'm headed back out to...

Re: Radiator Recomendations?
I called the shop provided in the sticky and they no longer have the Reach radiators. Maybe I missed them in the past, but now I'm suddenly seeing at least 2 other brands claiming to have the 1" core. WorldPac (USAutoparts.com) takes returns, no problem. When they sent me the wrong front Bilste...

Radiator Recomendations?
Does anyone have experience w/ any of the 1" radiators from Replacement or Nissens? I've always had good results w/ Nissens (OE on my SAABs) and some of the on-line parts stores are showing a 1" core rather than the anemic 5/8 I have now. I was nearly ready to go w/ the TranSport transfusi...

Re: AWD Engage/Defeat switch?
Thanks guys! I knew about the defeat part, and was planning on doing that this weekend, but was wondering about the locked engage for crawling around loose, steep scree in the mountains. Figured I do both at the same time... After some more archive searching I found the thread where it appears there...
