what to look for in an AWD

with baby coming in april, i am attempting to save some money to buy another late 90's van. something in the $1500-2000 range, which around here can get me a really nice 120-140k mile van on a good day. sometimes they even dip to $1000. the 96 4x4 3/4 ton project is almost complete, and admittedly i...

sad day, took my 95 to scrap

it was inevitable. miles, a life of hard work, and road salt had taken their toll. for the last couple months my 95 astro has been off the road and used as a shed. i aired up the flat tire, hooked up the jumpers, shot some starting fluid into the throttle body, and it popped and caught on fire, tryi...

did they make these things?

i was on my way to work and in a driveway i saw a plain white shorty cargo astro - obviously 94-down from the old front end, and being a shorty. it was clean, so my head turned to see.... dutch doors! did they make the shorty old cargo vans with dutch doors or did someone get creative? i'd love to h...

Re: Need to get new winter tires.

i LOVE my general altimax arctic tires. the last two winters i ran them on my crown vic, i just put them on my sonoma today because i was sliding around last night with the summer tread tires on it. they grip very well, are quiet on dry pavement, and are studdable.

Re: Solid Axle Swap and 4x4 conversion of 1996 LS 2WD

i'll have to post a pic of the donor, it was nasty. i can uninstall the load leveler helpers because the plow is on the big truck now, and slap them on the rear of my new sonoma. i did look at the van yesterday and want to work on it, but i had to rewire the plow and put a fuel filter on the work tr...

Re: 500 C.I. Caddy swap

i put a 1970 model 365hp caddy monster into my 1988 silverado. the torque was so fun the cab tore right off the frame at the mounts :yikes: the front sump can be overcome. i personally cut the pan and flipped the sump to the rear and made a new pickup tube to make it a rear sump. i still have the en...

my non astro toys

the 4x4 astro is one of my many toys. way too many when they all end up needing worked on, but when all in good order it sure is fun picking which one to drive. ordered from oldest to newest. 1940 chevy pickup dragged cab and bed off a farm where it was returning to the earth, bought a $500 1970 cam...

Re: Solid Axle Swap and 4x4 conversion of 1996 LS 2WD

got wrapped up with some work stuff, fixing the roof on the house, and doing intake gaskets and power steering pump on my sister's 3100 lumina. the front leaves are complete. ended up with the full s10 leaf pack, with two leaves(#2 and #4) from the k5 rear packs, and a superlift add-a-leaf made for ...

Re: LS series cooling

while i never ran my conversion before i pulled the ls engine out for another project and went with a traditional small block, i had installed the stock radiator using the hoses that came with my 01 silverado 5.3 and i put 97 caravan electric fans on. they fit the radiator pretty perfectly, and i am...

Re: Solid Axle Swap and 4x4 conversion of 1996 LS 2WD

heres one more shot from today. http://www.nastyz28.com/~patgizz/astro/zav16.jpg i got a bunch of parts i needed pulled from what is left of the k5 donor, and i began removing the old torched off steering arm. those cone washers blow. i hoped to get the steering hooked up but my steering linkage stu...
