Re: Replaced Fuel Pump / TPS Etc.

I had 86 4 cyl. Safari that would give me a mysterious ESC code. After a lot of parts it turned out to be the rotating magnet in the distributor had a small crack in it and very small sliver fell out. I would get a code when it was cold, then it went away when it warmed up. Don't know if this helps...

Re: Brake Lines

I replaced the rear lines on my 88 Astro. Remove the old lines and use them as a templates to bend the new ones. Copy all the bends exactly and lay it side by side until it is a perfect duplicate. Most of that can be done on the bench so the time spent on the ground is minimized. Use a scrap piece o...

Re: intermittant SES light - noticed something today

If the hose is the one I am thinking of, it is a rubber hose that slips over a steel tube. You can try a very small hose clamp. Another thing you can try is get a piece of small gauge solid cooper wire like 22 gauge. Wrap it around twice then twist the ends together using a pair of long nose pliers...

Re: Jacking and Placing on Jack Stands

Always have a backup. If you use jack stands also have the floor jack holding it. I am big on blocking lumber. Keep your eyes open for some one building a deck or railroad tie wall. When they are done look for the scraps and cut offs that get thrown out. Over the years I have gathered a great colle...

Re: Code 44 only when it rains

Thanks Mike. I think it might be getting wet. I suppose I can spray water on it from a garden hose and see what happens.

Re: Code 44 only when it rains

Not that I can see. Everything looks to be there. The oxygen sensor is in the exhaust pipe very close to the ground. I was thinking could the water from a puddle get the pipe and sensor so wet that it gets cold? The output from the sensor goes out of spec so you get a check engine light. Then when i...

Don't know. It has not rained heavy enough since I worked on it. I'll let you know when it does.

Code 44 only when it rains

Any ideas on this one? Van is a 1988 Astro 4.3, auto, 115,000 miles completely stock. It runs perfect. When it rains and if I drive through some really deep puddles I get a check engine light but it still runs fine. After about 20 minutes of driving the light goes out. If I read out the code, it is ...

Re: intake back fire

If I recall the symptom was a popping noise during heavy acceleration. If the acceleration was light or the engine was at a constant speed you would not hear anything. I started by removing the spark plugs and reading them. One plug was completely fouled as a result of the valve not opening. Then I...

Re: intake back fire

I owned a small block in a Chevy Bel Air years ago. Did the same thing, back fire through the intake manifold. Problem was a lobe on the cam for an exhaust valve wore down. The exhaust valve would not open. There was no lift because the lope was round. After ignition it was exhausting the next time ...

Re: Gotta change the differential fluid...

I had the same problem on my 88 Astro last year. Spray PB Blaster on the plug every day for 5 days. After you spray take a round pin punch, put it inside the 3/8 square and tap the punch lightly with a hammer. After 5 days try to remove the plug and it will turn.

Sources for generic parts

I don't know if anyones knows about these companies or not so I thought I would share it. I work in an engineering lab and build prototypes of time, parking, attendance and special test equipment so we are always looking to buy some odd ball part we don't have inside the company. There are three so...

Re: steel brake lines, when to replace?

Thanks Rob. To get back to the brake lines for a minute..... One of the most helpful things I found was the PB Blaster penetrating cataylast. The brake line and fittings were very rusted and I had visions of breaking or stripping frozen fittings. I tried to plan ahead which fitting I would be tryin...
