Re: steel brake lines, when to replace?

Rob, What did you do for the bottom plastic pan and the insulators? They are specific to the size of the tank. The one's from the 17 gallon will not fit the 27 gallon. I am asking for future reference. The only place I could get them when I did was from the dealer. Did you find an after market sourc...

Re: steel brake lines, when to replace?

Bob, I had a 1986 Safari before this Astro and had to replace the tank so I said the same thing. If I am not prepared with time or money to replace everything (if necessary) I did not want to touch it. By the way what kind of new tank did you get at Autozone? 17 gallon original or 27 gallon replacem...

Re: steel brake lines, when to replace?

Thanks for the advice guys. I am a little surprised I started getting recent replies to this post since I posted it last August. I did take your advice very seriously. I went ahead and replaced the line that goes past the gas tank. I did not have the time to drop the tank. If I drop the tank I will ...

mystery thump

Did this ever happen to anyone? This is weird. I have 1988 Astro 4.3 auto. with 115,000 miles on it, all stock all original.I have had it 1 1/2 years. Sometimes when I stop at a light and I am just sitting there in drive at a dead stop I feel a thump. It is about 10 to 15 seconds after I have come ...

Re: touchy brakes

I had an 1986 Safari cargo van for 10 years. At the same time my son had an 1988 Camaro. Both had disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear. Both had the grabbing problem when damp and cold or if it sat for a while. I spent a lot of time and money analyzing this problem. It was always the rears...

Larry,

My van is an 88. Did you find out what you needed to know? The picture of the 87 is exactly like my 88.

steel brake lines, when to replace?

I had the unforunate experience on my 86 Safari of loosing the brakes due to a rotted steel brake line that broke. I now have a 88 Astro. I looked over the brake lines very closely. The two lines that are mounted to the rear axle housing that go to each rear brake were rusted so bad that the spring ...

Cat Converter Plug Repair Trick

I discovered this handy trick I would like to pass on to anyone that might have a similar problem. I owned a 1986 Safari and now I own a 1988 Astro. This happened to both of them. There is a sheet metal plug in the of bottom of the cat converter. On both my vans it rotted out and I had a exhaust lea...

furnace cement

I wanted to share this info because it might help other people. I had a 1970 Duster slant 6 years ago. The exhaust manifold was cracked and I wanted to replace it. While disassembling it I broke off an mounting stud. I had good access so I tried my hand at drilling out the broken stud. I kept drilli...
