Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

still dealing with the startup issue after shutdown. I did change from the overboost valve to a giant fuel selector valve you can actually feel activating when you turn the key. There is no question its fully turning, and the way the vehicle operates is the same. There is no reason this arrangement ...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

Im going to compensate forward. Preliminary measurements looks like the engine will fit with the tranny in the same place. Should even fit with the radiator, i will have to go with an electric fan though. One question area is the brake booster area/power steering pump area. New motor mounts have to ...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

Twice the hp and torque for one extra cylinder essentially. Plus a simplification of oiling. (I can go to a mb stock filter arrangement) Don't know torque numbers off hand but the 616 is about 72hp, and the 617 is around 130-140hp, with corresponding increases in torque as well. With the same gear r...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

Running great! Haven't made any major improvements since my decision to swap motors next year, but I'm puttering around every work day reliably. Pending issues are I need to winterize the van a bit. No blower function, and holes into the cabin make for a drafty ride EDIT- Just realized I never menti...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

Interesting. So, where do you think all that dirt comes from, and how can you minimize it ? Dirty Fuel? a dirty Fuel Tank (Inside) ? its probably just asphaltene in the ULSD. The tank looked pretty clean, and any bits from the conversion would be metallic from the cutting of the fuel fill door. I d...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

changed the fuel filter after what I estimate to be a little less than 5k on the conversion- the media used to look like the filter on the left- pretty nasty A lot of this can be debris from the work done and the first filter catching it, but I think ill check this filter every oil change, its amazi...

check this out- This person has me beat by a couple years on the conversion. Wish this video was about the van and not the graphics on it though. Couldn't find any info on it, but would love to compare notes with this person http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDRGyWBvbVI I worked out a basic mercedes st...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

Ive shot an incredibly long and probably horrendously boring for people video of driving around now that I finally found a way to affix the camera. it turned out to be 19 minutes long, if you skip to half way though, there is some highway driving. Things are a bit louder than the video demonstrates,...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

You gotta love projects like this...always building brackets and little things to get as perfect as you can. Took me a long time to get the SPB correct. lol, yeah. Turns out the exhaust place that put together my exhaust went all the way in the wrong direction as far as mounting, the sucker might a...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

today was a big test of tow performance. I rented a 5 x 8 trailer and picked up two pallets of material and supplies from a shipping terminal about 20 miles from me. Each pallet was approx 400lbs. trailer unloaded- http://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd387/tinworm2/003_zps2f060729.jpg did pretty wel...

Re: starting my diesel swap, 4cyl MB diesel engine into 89 A

4.56 did the trick! 1st sluggishness gone, can pull overdrive with good cruising note on highway, most importantly can do hill starts in 1st now. Very steep little hill near work, previously had to floor in 1st and nearly stall out on the top, now can pull 2nd up same hill and downshift into first a...

Very Nice. I gotta get me one of them Sawzalls ! So, Now you have 4.56 gearing ? :supz: sawsall is the ultimate tool for violent non precise cutting. :D Also makes a handy weapon, you definitely need one! yup, 4.56 time! can't wait to get a test drive under my belt on this, see if it has the gearin...
