Sounds to me like you have a sensor gone bad. If the cat has been replaced there should be no reason it failed, unless your putting certain addatives in your gas or running leaded/race gas. I'd start with the sensor myself but thats just my 2 cents.

Performance would go down, going to a higher gear, your gas milage would go up for hyw milage, but prob down for city. I honestly dont know if they go up to a 3. something gear set. All cars kick the AC on when you set the heater to defrost. I may be wrong in this but i have always unplugged the ac comp during the winter months. Most of the cars i have drove got bad gas milage with ac on(yes esp the Safari) I wanted to run it as little as pocciable.

Thats awsome but compleatly worthless.... even as a race engine it still has to hold together longer than 2 or 3 pulls esp with that kind of money in it. I would have been happy with 1000hp keep the boost down an have it last awhile at least a season or so.

My dvd player will start auto if left on pause more than 10 mins. Sort of like a screen saver for these new TV's. Not all of them do it though from what I heard.

Seeing as you admited you dont have a place to work on it, i would be a junkyard tranny an replace it. rebuilding an auto takes a good CLEAN place to work and some special tools so i would only try that if you find some one who has done one before and lends you a hand.
