spare tire carrier

Post by snapple »

This type of spare tire carrier would be nice for vans with dutch doors. If it could be adapted specifically for our vans that is.This is for a Vanagon.

Only problem is the price is outrageous! :vom:

Good idea, but the latch would have to be moved to the lower door since our vans don't have any bodywork between the doors and the bumper.

Anyone have a van already that has dutch doors and a rear tire carrier?

Nice find. Ohhh, thats nice, but yeeaaaah that price hits where it hurts. Hmm. I got some ideas...went to talk to my fabricator man yesterday but he wasn't in...but I can't imagine he's gonna be any cheaper. Talent +time+small quantities=$$$

Sure like that blue synchro.

You can tell a bit of thought went into the vanagon design (not saying it didn't on the other carrier) but for $775 the tire can ride inside, lol

Oh no! That one may solve all my problems! I haul my bikes in the receiver carrier, but it doesn't swing out of the way. This would swing the whole deal away. Maybe rig a jerry can. Oh no!

Nice website by the way.

Looks to be a good option! I emailed them some questions on size and weight ratings. If the convertible version would fit my '94 Astro. Also how many bikes the rack would hold.I'll pass on any info they send me.
Although, considering the prices on all the above mentioned racks.I'm leaning towards designing and making my own.My buddies a welder,so I'll have to run some ideas by him.If it's going to cost $$,would rather pay a friend to do it and avoid shipping charges!
Maybe Dean, might have some ideas! :D  The rock rails he designed and built for me our awesome!! Check them out here:

If I had more time, I would definitely be interested in designing something! Maybe I could come up with a design using a trailer hitch as a mount...hmmmmm.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy

That's what I was thinking. Not something that uses the main receiver, but something more to the left or drivers side of the van.Been also thinking about designing a new rear bumper with a carrier integrated into it.Like some of the aftermarket Jeep bumpers I've come across while surfing around. :-k
Can't yet decide whether I want it to swing or tilt back,as far as accessing the back.

I say off to the side. Who would want the spare in their way while trying to load/unload their van?

Well, maybe its just me.But, I don't want to crawl under my van and fight with a rusted spare hanger to change a flat. :-({|=
But at least it will hold a full size spare under there.
