Emergency light

Post by NotDadsW41 »

All,

I used to own a 91 Chevy p/u. Under the hood it had what I always thought was a pretty cool light. It was just a standard white bulb in a little plastic holder. The cool thing was it was on a 15+ foot lead that was retractable and had a magnet on it. So if you were out in the middle of nowhere w/o a flashlight, this thing would help you out. The magnet was cool because you could stick it anywhere. Plus the lead was long enough to reach to the opposite side of the truck. Great thing if you are fixing a flat in the middle of the night.

Anyway, I found one of these things just before we moved last year. I'm trying to find the blasted thing right now in the garage. I intend to mount it in the rear of the van, in the jack compartment. Under hood would just be too tight.

Just passing along the idea. I'll take some pictures and write it up once done.

I've read about that light on some of the p/u forums I visit.
Not sure if it is even available as GM item. I think the bean counters deleted it.
I think there is a non-oem unit out there somewhere.
Maybe I'll make a trip down the "search" button next time I'm there.

Kinda like the old "ash-away" option in the 40's I think.
A really neat idea.
That and the box with ice in it that you hung on the window for "conditioned air".

My 90 Suburban came with one as well. I grabbed it out of the truck before I sold it for parts but I haven't gotten around to installing it in the van yet.

I had bought a couple of small oval driving lights, one for my backup light and the other for under the hood. I didn't want the pressure swich so added an on off under the hood. Think it's a 55w bulb so lots of light.
I don't have a pic of the under hood light but here's one of the backup. Looks yellow because battery was low and motor wasn't running.

Yeah, I hear that actually driving the truck helps charge it up. You still remember how to do that, right? The engine's the thingy under the hood, the ignition switch is the doohickey in the steering column which is actuated by the dangly thingamajig which you prolly use only to clean out your ears with. I can send you a pic to confirm what it looks like (the dangly thingamajiggy, I mean) :-({|= :-({|=
