driver window won't go up!!!

Post by crash »

well, last night around 11pm i was going through the drive-thru and i put the window down at the speaker to place my order.... picked up my order and the window won't go up.

there was no weird noises or anything.. it's just stuck down.. this may become a how-to thread about removing a door panel or replacing a window motor #-o

Did you try to rotate the window crank in the both directions?
:D :D

There is ALWAYS a thread for everything here.........somewhere.

Anyway,
Motor off.
Turn the key to on but not start.
Turn on all of the accessories.
Turn on all the lights.
Now toggle the window switch a few times.
Did the lights get dim?

If no, then likely the switch or wires in the door jamb.
If yes, then likely the motor.

If switch, it can be removed and taken apart and cleaned.

These have been my first thoughts on your problem.
I was told getting my beauty sleep was a waste of time.

1993 Astro with a bad W motor. Parked next to a chicken coop in Talking Rock GA

motor is still trying to go up and down.. so does this thing have a track or maybe it's jammed somehow... i'd imagine they are similar if not the same as my 94 was.. i know the bolts that hold the motor in place came loose and when it would go up or down it would shift and jam a little around 1/2 way up or down .. once the twmp rises outside from -10 (that would be 14 F) .. least it's going to be sunny today and not rainin... it could always be worse.. lol 8-[

Sounds like the van needs some vehicular Viagra since it can't "get it up" :muhaha: If you ask peter I'm sure he'll be willing to share some of his with you. :D

The door panel removal in the newer ones is WAY easier than in the old ones. Mostly because the panels are backed with a semi stiff plastic not that super pressed card board or fibreglass looking crap.

I know you recently just made the switch from old to new like I did so I figured I would point that out to help your morale.

Also the window motors and regulators are the exact same as what was in your 94. My 98 is currently using a motor out of my 93 \:D/

Which reminds me if you need a window motor I probably have a used one laying around so let me and this I'll actually get it to you LOL sorry about that man I still feel bad about that.

I have had intermittent problems with my drivers side power window as well. It will go down but only go up a little. After a 'rest' it will go up a little more. (Repeat until window is all the way up) Other times it works just fine going up and down. I figure it is probably the motor starting to go, but all the e-bay sellers only ship UPS and the brokerage fees into Canada would take a deal and make it cost as much a Napa here which is a rip off.

That sounds liek the thermal overload circuit in the motor is starting to die. There was a how-to for by passing or repairing it on AS but I dunno if it's here on ASV.

IIRC I have 1 spare passenger motor and 2 driver side. So If you want one you can have one as well. I don't really mind giving away my spare used parts. I get some deep discounts at a local Delco distributor. :yawinkle:

i like that idea potskie.. lol i might even be able to supply an indoor (heated & lighted) area to work...

well my door panel is off, only broke one plastic tab lol

the motor is trying to turn but looks like the small gear is not aligning with the large scissor looking gear that moves and pulls up the window. almost like it's jammed itself. i can't see where and of course with everything riveted in place i can't easily try to get better access. my hands have gone numb so i'm taking a break .. i'll try to fiddle with it some more and see if i have any luck

edit: added pics (not that you can see anything in there)

for now i'd just be really happy if i could figure out how to get the window into the UP position before we get rain or someone decides to rumage through the van in the driveway overnight

edit: with the help of my son we managed to get the window back up, all the way. he operated the up/down button and i reefed on the window lifting up from the bottom. it took us about 8 attempts but on the last one there was a snap or clunk noise at the point of the gears and the motor lifted the window up the rest of the way on it's own.

once it cools down (motors aren't meant to be hit up down 50 times in a row) i'm going to try down and up. i don't think it's the motor itself as much as something coming out of alignment and jamming up the gears... something just ain't right.. lol .. now i can sleep tonight

Getting together has potential, but this week looks very busy for me at the moment. I will take this as an incentive to try to work fast. :)

well i didn't try the window again yet. good thing we got it back up last night though, over night we got some freezing rain.. that would have been a mess with the window down. took the jeep to work instead this am.

as for meeting up.. it might have to be when the weather is a bit nicer otherwise my boss won't let me pull his 56 chev outside for the day.. lol
