Need to install a Tach

Post by TanVan03 »

General question....

How difficult is it to install a tach on an 03 astro...and are there any tech tips on how to do so?

Not difficult at all,3 wires and rock and roll. Will take you more time to decide where to put it than wiring it up. Don't think there is any tech help on this. One wire to dist, one to hot and one ground for the light. My tach is wired through an MSD unit but think it was a white from the dist. Isn't that right guys ?

the wire colors on my '03 didn't make sense to me so i took the easy way out and got the MSD 6a and used its tach connection.

Feel free to price out a tach - but an easy way out might be a guage like the Scanguage II - it just plugs into your OBD port. Nice thing about that it also provide Transmission Temp and a few other goodies... do a search on the site - it'll pop up.

I checked it out and found it on ebay for a decent price as well. Pretty good tip, thanks! Specifically speaking of mpg, I'm not sure I can get any ROI out of it however. If I were going to install a tach, this definatley would be the way to go.

Thanks for the info on the Scangauge II - it also does transmission temps as well, which was going to be another gauge I was looking into.....

This looks like it will do the trick!!

Report back after your install. The tranny temp feature certainly interest me. Hmmm.

I've got one of these scanguages and they work slick - tach right out of the box - a quick program tranny temp was working great. I think however the tranny temp only works with newer vans. Not sure when the cut off is but I imagine it's probably something like 98+

Does anyone else with a scanguage know?
