4.56 gears in an AWD??

Post by scarecrow »

is anyone running 4.56 gears in there AWD with 31in tires? i see 4.10 are the most popular is there a reason for this? i have always ran a high gear than i needed in my trucks and have always been happy. and now with my van and going to 31s i was wanting 4.56s for the bottom end. i know i will loose topend (highway speeds) but as long as i can do 70mph thats fine with me....

I don't think anyone is running 4.56's. With 31's they are not really needed. 4.10's work pretty good. The problem with the 4.56's will be the VERY weak front pinion gear. There will be very little contact area between the pinion and ring and if you actually wheel it, you will blow it apart. I chipped the 4.11's in the SPB and didn't even beat on it when wheeling...not until the SAS anyways. :muhaha:

If you really want low gears, you might consider a gear splitter.

na i dont need to go that low. i was thinking of the 4.56s just for that extra power cruising around and towing. now i dont tow anything heavy either 2 dirt bikes or my rhino and the rhino weights in at 1000 lbs.

I am very satisfied with the low end performance of my 4:10s with my 30.5 in tires. I don't tow. I do a certain amount of off pavement and easy 4x4 mountain trails. I can still cruise comfortably at 80mph (have the tiket to prove it #-o ). It jumps off the line and doesn't hit the end of its torque curve for a while. Its perfect fo what I want to do.

The only recent comparison I can think of is my buddy Jerry, who has four recreaational 4x4s and is very active off road. His off pavement "touring" and easy trail rig is a Bronco II. He put 4:56s with 33" and regrets it. Way too low he says, should have gone with 4:10. Yes different vehicles etc, but its all I got for ya.
