After owning this 2002 Safari for about 2 of the 4 years it dawned on me that when I opened the rear hatch the lights don't go on.I said what's up with that. My last 3 Astro's lit up.
So at my last service I talked to my advisor and asked him to check on it.
When I picked up the van I asked if he found an answer.
His quote "The hatches don't have a switch anymore"
Now I ask you all.WTF????
Why would they do that ?

Re: Interior lights.
They all have rear door/hatch light switches. I wouldn't use this guy's services anymore.

Re: Interior lights.
.
For my 2001 AWD Safari, there's NO auto rear cargo light when its rear window is lifted. Was told its built-in factory switch is no longer included (with new factory build). For my van, I simply visited my local auto / RV store, bought a 12V dome light that has its own off/on manual switch and installed it. Its super bright - brighter then over head factory light (when its front doors are open). With my own rear light (and it own off/on switch), I can chose when to light up the rear cargo area. If wondering, I installed the 12V light (with its own switch) on the upper side plastic rear pillar. Simply connected its "+" wire to its AC outlet (located at floor level). And, connected its "-" wire to frame ground. Very simple 1 hour install. For a visual of the simular light that I installed in my van, surf:

BTW: Why no factory switch??? Simple: To allow GM to save "factory build" costs. Only reason.
Hope this helps...

Re: Interior lights.
Ya,why change that so late in the production.
It's not like they were saving lots of money or something people thought was unuseful.
Maybe the installer was one of GM's early layoffs lol sorry....
