Which accessory brackets should I use?

Post by 89AstroDan »

I'm swapping a 93 5.7L into my 89 Astro and was wondering which brackets others had used. My 89 has the stamped steel, one piece accessory bracket where as the 93 motor has the cast, two piece brackets. Which do you recommend and why?

Using your original brackets means you don't have to mod any lines/wiring for a/c, PS etc...
If the 93' block accepts both brackets, what's easiest for you?

Stamped is always stronger than cast .

I believe your 93 the alternator is on the passenger side, and your ac is on the drivers side, on the 89 aren't these in reverse order? If they are you would probably want to go with the 89 brackets.

You didn't mention what vehicle the '93 v-8 came from but if it was a truck it probably had the accessories in the same configuration as the steel '89 brackets. If that is the case I would use the aluminum brackets for a couple of reasons, they are significantly lighter, they are stronger (less braces needed to the top of the intake), and not prone to cracking like the steel ones (near the power steering pump), they are also less intrusive when trying to reach into the engine compartment. Here is a picture of the ones that I am talking about for reference.

The motor came out of a Buick Roadmaster wagon and I believe every things in the same place. I have the bracket from the 89 in place but the support bars don't line up any more. Not even close. It seems a good idea to put something back. I notice the cast parts use ribbing for strength instead of the extra bracing. I was just curious what others did so I don't have regrets later down the road. Thanks for the pics, that helps.
