Will this engine fit into our Astro's?

Post by pengyou »

It is also a 4.3L - i think the block is identical. What caught my eye is that it has 24 valves vs. 12 in ours ....I can almost smell the tires burning if we popped a set of these valves on our blocks (maybe opened up the exhaust just a wee bit), threw on a turbo charger and let her fly!

Actually doing all of these things would probably give a 'stro an extra 2 mpg (assuming you didn't keep the pedal to the metal.

Given that it's a chevy, I tend to think that they took that engine, removed a cam and put a 12 valve head on it for us. Please someone tell me I'm wrong...

HHmmmm :-k ,.....guess it would have to do with the physical size difference. Not alot of extra width and height under our doghouse.Good question, but my feeling is folks just simply move on to the V8 solution :bounce:

GM builds experimental engines in all kinds of configurations. Years ago HotRod magazine did a spread on several of them. Really cool stuff. Unfortunately, we'll never see any of them reach production. \:D/

Ya this has to be an experimental car as they never offered the 4.3 in any car only trucks and vans. I always thought that if you had to get a v6 in a camero I would want a 4.3 prefer a supercharged version ala Typhon style.

Yes, I thought I had heard of it being put into passenger cars. I think they discontinued it because by using smaller V6's with multiple valves and other "doo-dads" they found they could get more horsepower, reduce the weight of the engine (and hence the car and reducing the needs of the suspension, etc), get better gas mileage and raise the price of buying and repairing the car because of all of the extra "doo-dads" they were adding to the car to give it more power and fuel mileage.

Yes, I realize that a V8 is an option but if there is a 18 or 24 valve head out there that will give our babies a boost - maybe another 50 hp - and possibly improve economy for about $500-800 without adding significant weight to the vehicle or needing someone to redesign the dog house, etc I think it is worth looking into...and then we could take a look at the valves and ports and see how they could be modified to really scream and kick pigu (pigu is a Chinese word for...well, you know, the thing that we all hope our van's can kick when we find an obnoxious driver of Japanese imports stopped next to us at the red light :muhaha:
