Quick question for fuel pump replacement

I have just a quick fuel pump replacement question--for those who have done this job. My GM shop manual says to use a GM fuel sender wrench to get the fuel pump out--do I really need this tool, or will a brass drift and a mallet work?

A brass drift and a mallet would work fine.

Just keep a fire extinguisher close by. Always.

I've done five fuel pump replacements, never once used any "special tools".

Gm probably has "Special Tools" for changing air fresheners... while I'm sure that there special tool #jjcnbwgfyg7y784r84 would probably help do it a little quicker, there is always a work around somehow and I think from what I've read that most use the brass drift and mallet method.

I think most of the newer vans use a snap ring anyway. Grumpy, Green and Blue (my 2000) all did. Red (my 1994) used the turned ring.

special tool? I did it the naughty way with a hammer and a big screwdriver. I just don't hit it hard enough to make sparks...no problems. tap tap tap tap....

Jus` like wot they said, gently with a hammer and a large screwdriver. Don`t forget to replace your fuel filter also.

No Snap Ring as far as I can see--really rusted though. Got to wonder if those things are crimped down to make it more difficult. I used PB Blaster and beat the he!! out of that retainer... :banghead: Still in there...

Ummm....why did you cut those high pressure lines? Are you just replacing all of them?

Keep beating on that locking ring. It will come off eventually. They are not crimped.

I only cut 2 lines. They had kinked and discolored at the area they kinked anyway. I figure the extra money wasn't such an issue considering what I'm saving doing this myself...
