92 Astro Tranny Troubles

Post by pappy327 »

Hi all, First timer here. Been going thru about all postings, but need more info.
Van been sitting for 3 years, now after 120 miles, tranny stays in first. Checked fluid level
and added 2 quarts, no help. Not sure what to check next.
Was running a little sluggish before it quit, but getting me there and back.

92 Chevy Astro
4.3L Motor (Solid)
4L60/MD8 Auto
141,000 mies

I have very little knowledge of tranny's and would appreciate al the help I can get.
92 Chevy Astro 4.2L, Auto, 2WD no mods.... Yet.
98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.9L SuperCharged.... parked..... blown head gasket.

Love my Astro, like my Pontiac.
Now do I spend cash on 98 or 92 ??????????
Depends on cash, I'm not much of a mechanic anyways,
But do what it takes.

Drop the pan and replace the filter and put new fluid in. Inspect the bottom of the pan for chunks and pieces. My guess is your 700R4 with 141,000 miles is about due for a rebuild.
Current rides:
2013 Toyota Tundra DC 4x4
2008 Dodge Nitro 4x4
2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S Special Edition

Mileage spreadsheet

Vans owned:
1986 Safari 2.5L 4 speed manual - scrapped
1995 Astro 2WD conversion 4.11 posi, shift kit, DHC rock rails - sold to Skippy
1998 Astro 4x4 D44, D60, NP231, full hydraulic system with 9k# Milemarker winch and snow plow - sold to Lockdoc
2003 Astro AWD all stock - traded for a 3/4 ton truck
2005 AWD, 4.10's - sold to skippy
