95' Safari 4.3 to 5.7 vortec questions
I'm assuming that my 95 safari is a 4.3L vortec engine as it's CPI. That said I have access to a 97' Z71 with a vortec 5.7L.
Just checking but i'm pretty sure this is a direct swap like a tbi to tbi is.
Obviosly have to change the ECU but how about the fuel pump?
Thanks guys,
Gordon

Gordon-I looked up the specs for both and it looks like you can use the same fuel pump.

Sweet thanks... i kind of figured as much being as they are both CPI.
Now i just have to get the truck and rip out the motor and ECU... oh and cut the front end off the van to get the motor out (i don't have a hoist to lift the body off).

That should be a pretty strong V8 swap.I am sure you know to grab the wiring harness out of the p/u truck and label the connectors.Might not be a bad thing to grab the fuel tank just to see if the fuel pump crosses over.If it is a donor truck, you can never have too many parts while doing the swap.
Gordon, wouldn't it be easier to just rent a cherry picker??.Just a thought.

Aren't the wiring harnesses identical?
I can get parts from the truck but not the whole thing... less parts = less $$$ out of pocket.
Cherry Picker I have, just don't feel like seperating the body from front end...lol

Almost identical. You have to add the wiring for the extra injectors. I've done the engine through the front. Never again. It's SO much easier if you remove the sub frame.

Extra injectors?
Vortec's only have 1 injector and 6-8 poppet valves... right?

Re: 95' Safari 4.3 to 5.7 vortec questions
1995 is very different from the 1996 and on. 1995 will have the old style CPI, the ecm is inside the van, and the wiring harness is way different. The 97 pcm is totally different. The 1995 trans isn't compatible with the 97 pcm either.
I'm not saying it can't be done, just stating that it's not like doing a 1996 or newer van. You can use the truck engine and trans, but you will basically need to build a stand alone harness and intergrate it into the vans wiring.
The real vortecs are 1996 and newer, and they all swap pretty easy.

Naw, just use the trans and t-case from the truck too, and do a SAS, you'll be home free.Gordon wrote:well SOB... the truck is a 4x4 so now i'm gonna need a trans too.

Actually, you could use the truck engine, a vortec tbi manifold, and run the two extra wires and swap to a tbi ecm. Lockdoc has done a cpi to tbi swap viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3330
.
You'll need a tbi and a few things, but should be easier than what you're thinking.
The 97 vortec will make more power as is, and the stand alone harness is explained at www.lt1swap.com. He can flash the 97 truck pcm to rid you of emission stuff also. You have choices, just none are real easy.

That does sound good, just be careful to get the TV cable just right on a 700r4 carb combo. Beats all of the FI wiring, cheap and easy.
