bracket for rocker cladding .. help!!

Post by crash »

as my posted in the wanted section goes... my cladding has decided to drop off. the stuff under the door on the rockers. so this post really isn't a duplicate. at least i don't think it is. LOL ??

even if I can't find someone to dig some up and ship it.. perhaps someone that lives in a no salt area can give me pics and dimensions so that I can get some made up somehow.

here's the image of the pieces i need (one for drivers side and one for pass side) ... thanks!!!!!!!

Green's is falling apart too. Terrible place for cheap steel. I'm considering two things. Remove cladding and Herculine or fab new hardware from aluminum or stainless.

I'm not exactly sure what that part is.
Is it the painted body metal part that shows to the world?
Or something underneath the van?

see the gold cladding on the bottom ? the upper section is attached to the doors. the bottom runs along the rocker ... under that there is a piece that can't be seen, but it's what the bottom rocker cladding piece attaches to. it's actually bolted onto the rocker itself and the plastic cladding snaps on to it.

edit: hhm i thought i posted a pic with that 'see' part LOL.. guess i was zoned

true... there may be a usable small piece to go by to have a new one bent up. i'd suspect on drivers side about 8" in front of rear wheel. area that has the least salt exposure.

Crash, what did you end up doing ??? I noticed the cladding on the rocker under the PS door on my van has started to pull away. I peeked in and the bracket you describe is pretty much done !!

as you well know 'mr knome' LOL .. my beloved van is gone ](*,) probably not one of the brightest moves I've ever made.

to keep things together the last few months I had it .. I got a couple of long sheet metal type screws and predrilled a single hole through the front and rear cladding pieces (where they over lap) and into the rocker. screwed in the screw to the point that the cladding was flush. over tightening makes it look as bad as falling off. took my can of touch up paint and dabbed the head of the screw.
best quick fix without pulling it all off and replacing.

LOL, I have stainless self-tapping screws for just such an occasion.

I might, just might try to take off that front section and pull out whats left of the rusty bracket. Its pretty rough looking and I don't want it to start rotting out the rocker behind the cladding.

correct, that's what I did too: get out as much of the old rotted bracket as possible first. just remember, those screws are going to have to be pretty long, crap i can't remember, maybe 2" or 1 3/4" ... guessing, i'd say there's at least a 1/2" gap between the cladding and rocker. that gap has to stay or the screw will pull the cladding too far in.

What a mess !!! I pulled off the cladding today and all I have left is appx 4". I called GM and the PN# is 15151226 for the PS and the cost is $204.00 for the bracket alone.

I will wait until my parts guy gets back from Vacation and see what he can do. Anyone else have any luck ??

I know I am late to this party but ...

I just got some 1 1/4 standard aluminum bar stock from the Hardware Store.
Removed the old bracket, mostly rust!
Cleaned rocker with mineral spirits and soapy water, no rust underneath.
Cut the bar to length, Marked the existing holes left to right.
Drilled holes centered verticaly on the bar.
Drove in new Stainless Steel self tapping screws.
Installed cladding, note the buttons mostly broke on removal, large auto trim buttons from hardware store worked great as replacements.

Repeated on all the cladding around the vehicel. Looks great is plenty strong and cost about $40.
