broken screw in rear end

Post by astrosafari »

hey. got a little issue..
i gotta change my backing plates, so i need to take out my axles. to take the pins off the ends of the axle, i have to get the small shaft out with the gears on it. the 8mm screw that holds that in is broken about halfway in. :( it seems like it would be a difficult spot to drill.
any one got any ideas?
i might just go buy another rear end from a friend for $75..

Corey,

As long as the $75.00 rear end is the same rear end ratio or better and is in decent shape,it's almost not worth your time to try to easy-out the broken bolt.

Gonna have to drill it out. Try to center punch the broken bolt so you get it as centered as possible. If you can find the reverse rotation drill bits and heat the area around the bolt first, you will be able to get it out.

It is definatly less work to remove a broken bolt than to change a whole rear end and all the brakes to cure the problem. Thats like rebuilding the engine because it needs a pint of oil.
