great read. i've been contemplating going with one or the other as well for quite some time. in particular i was thinking of going with a mac mini but lately have been wavering towards a laptop considering the career change i'm considering and the portability factor.

my initial reason for considering the mini was more from a home automation perspective. with external hard drives attached i found that i could use the mini as basically an entertainment hub to stream movies, music and photos to any room in the house. convenience of apple tv already with the mini was also a bonus however with the introduction of net flix up here that isn't much of a bonus at this point considering the varying pricing between the two.

great read either way and a great thing to get perspectives from all involved. still on the fence at this point and probably have to do more research but all the input has helped. thanks guys.

Well so far I am really liking the apple, however iworks is taking a bit to get used to. I had just figured out many things on excel and couldn't find them in numbers ( they are worded differently or have a different home). However after an internet search of what I wanted to do I was easily able to remedy the problem. I love the speed of the computer I just hope it keeps up over the years. :)

PS
With a bit of work the old laptop could have been cleaned up to almost as good as new
Still Kickin...

That is true, but really needs to be completely reloaded every year or 2 to keep in top operating condition. Than and I placed the windows install disc in the drive and it wouldn't reload due to the disc being service pack 1 and the computer having SP2. ](*,) Maybe I should have typed in "format c:" and went from there. I may still restore the old Dell and give it to Ben for his play computer.

The old one is a Dell Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz, 1 meg ram, I think a 40 gig HD. Bought in 2002.

I've been using a Mac for a few years now and I'm still glad I do, but certain things are really frustrating about them.

I can't stand the attitude designers have that they know what's best for you. When they say "think different", it's double-speak for "think the same as every other Mac user", and when they say "it just works" it's spin for "unsophisticated" or "oversimplified".

Just to name a few examples: there's no option for matte displays, and you can't even make the menu font bigger (something you could do in Windows since 3.1)
