New muffler!

Post by JTalley »

Just finished ordering a new muffler! :bounce:
I'm pretty sure my cat is bad, so I'm planning to bust it out and put the new muffler on since I didn't have a muffler before.
I got this one.

I'm eager for it to come in, and I can't wait to hear the new sound! :guitar:

Thats barely a muffler at all.
I have a glass-pack like that, it was as just loud as a straight pipe and pretty much is.
I added a Magnaflow muffler further down the pipe, later on. Now it sounds awesome.
You could check the length of your cat, and this muffler. You might find that you could cut the cat out, and put this muffler in its place.
If you have the early style cat, as I suspect you do, you're probably better off to hack it off, than to try clearing a path through it.
Have you got a friend who can weld for you?
The newer cats after 93-95 or so, are a way different design, are fatter and straighter.
you can stuff a sharpened tip pipe through the new ones fairly easy to bust out all the guts.
I wouldn't waste my time doing that to a real old, flat wide cat like my 87 & 90 had.
cut it off and sell it to a scrapper, you can get some bucks for it believe it or not! maybe even 20 or more.

Make sure you won't have any inspections in the future. You can get a piece of exhaust pipe to put in that spot, not that I have ever done that.

A hacksaw would work for that, right?

It's here! :bounce:
Along with a small package containing some AWESOME STICKERS, among other things. I can't wait until tomorrow, when I have about an hour and a half in the metal shop to do my welding and cutting! :supz:

Good luck with the install. If you or anyone else wants to try a different kind of muffler try FULL BOAR Max Flow SS muffler. I have had probably 10 different brand mufflers over the years such as Flowmaster, Gibson, Magnaflow, Spintech, Cherrybomb, etc. Similar to a Flowmaster 2 chamber in idle sound, however no where near the interior resonance, and the kicker is they are mandrel bent inside. It is designed after a Magnaflow muffler (which is crush bent inside), however at almost half the price it outflows Magnaflow... I think they run typically around $47 and they are stainless. Just throwing it out there vanners.

Unfortunately right after I designed that catback for the shop that now sells them I got laid off by them... I won't say anymore, but I do like the mufflers.

About seven months later... That's bad, even for me, but I finally got that exhaust put on. It's a LOT quieter now, surprisingly. Someone says that it'll get louder when the fiberglass melts, but I don't really know much about that. Will it?

Also, I got a bunch of scrap pieces of pipe that came off my uncle's truck when he re-did the exhaust. I've been welding that all together to make a decent tailpipe... It's smaller than my current pipe, but I have an adapter that I can put on there. Once I get that welded up, I can have someone weld the whole assembly on. I'm just not a good enough welder to weld under a car yet, which is why I didn't put the muffler on myself.

I got a lot done on the tailpipe.

Image
Only had one glove on because I took off the other to get my phone out for the picture.
That piece at the end there is an adapter to make the pipe fit. It's a little smaller than the pipe that's currently on the van, but that end makes it work.
I don't know if I could weld it on myself because of the awkward location, so tomorrow a friend of mine is supposed to weld it on there for me.
