Hi from Southern Nevada (First Post)

Post by Ballenxj »

Hi guys, Just registered, and got my account activated in record time. Must have been a Mod there at the right time. :D
Anyway, I have a 93 AWD Safari that is a bit of a project. Runs great, but needs the front wheel drive components.
Anyway, I'm hoping to learn a lot more about it here.

Thank You James. I note you have a Z 4.3 motor? That's one thing I need to learn more about. Identifying my engine that is. The guy I bought mine from had just installed an engine in mine before I bought it. It seems to run way better than is should for the year, so I'm thinking he put a later, higher HP engine in it. Maybe I'll get it figured out eventually.

Welcome, Bruce. It's a great site. Lots of knowledge here. We need pics of the van.

Welcome Aboard Bruce.

Your 93 AWD probably has a VIN-W motor (CPI)
Not a VIN-Z motor (TBI)
But it could have either.
You can easily tell two ways:
1) Look at the 8th digit of the VIN. It is either a Z or a W.
2) Look at the engine: It either looks like it has a carb on top with a round aircleaner
or
it has the big Vortec CPI manifold with the aircleaner box up front connected by a rubber tube. (Almost looks like the TPI system on some V8 Camaros)

The CPI (VIN-W) engines have a LOT more power than the TBI (VIN-Z) engines.
2021 Yamaha Tenere 700 - Blue.
2016 Yamaha XSR900 - Silver.
1990 Astro - AWD - Brown.
1987 Astro - With 5 Speed & 4wd - Silver & Blue.

Thanks, The van has a "W" in the vin, and has the rectangular filter box right behind the hood latch with a rubber hose leading from that to the intake.
