I really liked the yellow Shell station photo that has the kid jumping on the bell hose.
Think I've done that one a time or two...

They were 'Service Stations' back then, not 'Gas Stations'.

You would pull in & it would look like a pit crew swarming.... Windows, Fuel, Tire Pressure, Engine Oil, Brake Fluid, Coolant, V-Belt tension... all were checked & topped or tightened up.

Texaco had an add campaign that went, "You can trust your car to the man that wears the star...".

The Pyrex-Beaker pumps, I also remember. Gas was pumped into a clear, graduated cylinder and then gravity fed into your tank.... at $0.29/gal for High-Test, (Ethyl). That was the 100+ octane stuff with tetra-ethyl lead.

Go ahead, laugh.... my cane's within reach.

Thanks for the pix!!

I used to jump on the bell ringer cables....Yikes
And believe or it not I remember 29.9 cent a gallon regular gas as a little kid. I remember in the '70s we all said, "when gas gets to a dollar a gallon I'm walkin'! YEAH RIGHT!

At 33 years old, I don't remember any of those style pumps except the last one posted. But I do remember those bell cables! My most nostalgic memory of those service stations were the cans of oil, and the funnel used to puncture the oil can.

I have one of those funnels kick around here somewhere. My dad gave it to me with a bunch of tools years ago. Beleive it or not I still use it once in awhile as some motor oils and lubes can still be purchased in those cans.

Some places around here use the bell hose to this ( usually the older places out of town) and I still love jumping on them \:D/

When (and if) you get to be a "GEEZER" I hope you look back to a time as great as those days. Everything had character. Not like today where all of the neighborhoods look alike. All of the big box stores look alike. All of the cars look alike. And on and on and on. I remember cranking the pump on the tank that carried kerosene. Yes, we had a kerosene heater. And the milk man delivered to your door. And as a kid it was great fun to beg a small piece of ice from him. I remember big blocks of ice being delivered to my Grandmothers house for the "Ice Box". It was definitely a different time. Now, having said that, I'm not stuck in the 50's. I really like the new technologys. I just don't care much for the AIDS problem, the rampant crime, and the possibility of some wacked out drug addict hurting one of my loved ones for the pocket change they might have. Anyway, that's a cool post. Thanks.
