your t-stat may have stuck closed,after its cooled down take a look at the coolant recovery bottle and fill it to the appropriate level if needed.Take off your rad cap and have a look,if the level is down add some to the bottom of filler neck,start van turn heat on full,if the temp gets way up again and the coolant level does not drop you know your t-stat isn't openin and will need to be changed,if the level of coolant drops all of a sudden that means your t-stat just opened and you were probably just low on coolant,top up the coolant then recap it,take for a test drive and monitor the temp.

Also before you start it up,just check to make sure your eng oil is where it should be as well.

how hard is it to replace the t-stat. are there any step by step posts for replacement. I go home on thursday so i need to fix this before my 500 mile drive.

Thank you I am going to have someone do it I do not have the time or tools to do all that while at school. :(
