I tend to agree with the "hair splitting" theory. I change mine at 3k
and don't worry about one filter doing a better job than another.

Bet you split hairs when it comes to guitar strings...

Hmmm. Good point. You're right about that.

OK. I'm sold. I'm off to find a Purolator or Wix or whatever.

I agree. Problem with oil filters vs guitar strings is that I can sense
a difference in strings right now, as I play them. I can't "sense" a
difference in oil filters, of course.

Even the article, very well researched and written as it is, doesn't really
deal with "real" engine differences. It deals with construction details
on the filter.

I don't know how we could measure any difference in engine life unless
we ran several identical engines for a long time using different filters
in each engine.

But I'll try some of the one's recommended as "best" and see if
I get more chicks looking at me, if my hair grows back and if
my abs get more rippled...

Actually, what I think is the coolest is that one filter that they said
the manufacturer added grit to the paint to make it easier to grab.

I stated previously my experience with fram filters,
Here's some food for thought.
Steph's 93 EXT is close to 300,000 klm's on the original engine,
Since 94 she has been using Fram filters,But she performs
regular oil/filter changes every 3,000 k religiously.
During the change the oil is tan,not black & upon inspection of
the used oil in the pan there is no sign of foreign/internal materials.

I'm at 325000+ Klm's and my oil was like tar the first few oil changes obviously neglected by previous owner my oil still comes out black (not as dark though) after i switched to K&N also original engine and trans as far as i can tell. filtration is important but it seems like the regular oil changes seems to be a better preventative action then just depending on your filter to get everything.

I am a WIX guy.

I get them from Fleetfilter.com and if I order 6 or so at a time, they end up cheaper than going to Wally World for frams.
