I used to use a military surplus wool blanket over my windsheild.

After 1 freezing rain storm I then got some of the big contact paper(its actually plastic) its sticky on one side people use it to line their cubards and stuff comes in like a 1 foot wide roll. Anyway I just covered the back side of my wool blanket with that so it wouldnt get wet.

Pots,ok-I'll stop horsing around on you.This is a answer/question:Lets say you have the remote starter and you are using a electric fan only.Well wouldn't the electric fan only come on once it reaches the top end of the temp??.Because of that,wouldn't the engine warm up faster??.Maybe someone could chime in with comments.

Remote starter, fer sure. Up here in The Great White North, many cars have remote starters which start the car up automatically every few hrs for about 5-10 minutes. And I'm sure you could prolly get a remote set-up with the option of tying in a temp sensor so's to start the car only when the temps are below a certain level.

I will also agree on the remote starter. The electric fan conversion will also heat the engine and passenger compartment faster. You could get away with almost keeping the fan off in the winter. The passenger compartment blower will pull enough heat out of the engine the cooling fan probably wouldn't hardly kick on.

Not sure how you're physically situated but I bought a cheap, electric heater (that has a temp adjustment) and set it on the dash of my work van. Ran a cord out the back & to the garage. If you can plug it in at the house you might be able to make it work. It takes care of the cabin/dash but not so much on the transmission or engine.

My water pump leaks so much, that I just top off the coolant with really hot water. My van warms up in just a couple of minutes

Start it the old fashion way. Let it run for 120 sec and go.

Get a recurculating block heater. They plumb into your heater hose and the bottom of your rad. They heat and curculate your coolent. You will have a clear windshield and instant heat down to about -20c. The cheap ones draw about 1500 watts so use a good extension cord.
For your oil and trans fluid you can use a frost plug style block heater. Use the low wattage ones, I think they are 400 watts.
Or you can do what we do up north and start your truck in say....November and shut it off in April. Don't forget to change your oil every 2 weeks though.
