Oh boy that was a long read for me!
Get the AWD ... electronic or not sounds like you will be fine as you are not planning to do must light-trails yet alone 4x4ing. I personally have a '97 with the v-clutch and I LOVE it! Tempted myself many times to do the 4x4 swap like a lot of the members here but I dont get on the tough trails enough to justify giving up the plush feel on-road.
Gas mileage wise be gentle on the throttle on start up and you start saving hah ha but as recommended by everyone, get an external tranny cooler installed ASAP. My temps dropped a lot and it is worth it.
