Or you could simply put electronically controlled solenoids on the end of valve stem right?

I guess you could, but they would have to be some pretty stout solenoids. Spring pressure on a 454 is 135lbs. stock. The last bbc I built had 148lbs. beehive springs with almost 3/4 of an inch travel.
The only problem I see with my idea is the weights would have to be quite large to over come the inertia needed to turn the cam. You would have to run a gear drive as the extra weight on the cam would stretch the hell out of a chain.

I must have mixed up my links, but the one I ended up posting is very impressive too and I think it can be considered emerging as well. (I also posted it in the "Other cool vehicles" topic). It's a Wankel (rotary) engine with 4 rotors and a turbocharger. It produces 1664 horsepower and 1158 ft-lbs of torque. The exhaust gets so hot, the air around it bursts into flame.
That engine was invented during the second World War and in use by the Germans.Hardly new......my two cents worth.

Just saw a ad on TV over the wkend while watching the NASCAR race.Variable valve timing is in use on the 2011 Ford trucks and on the new Mustang.

The title of the topic is "emerging technology", not "new ideas". Just like the displacement on demand technology that blacknome mentioned, Wankel engines are still being improved and have not yet seen mainstream production, and are therefore still emerging. Pushrod engines are also nearly a century old, but they're still being improved on, so you can still write about things like cam phasing here if you want.

Lighten up guys, this is just for fun. We're not writing an encyclopedia here.

I read the title very well thank you.In fact the fact the engine isn't wildly used is just not true.In fact there is a class in NHRA solely for that.I stood at the line watching a car stage to have my ears ringing for a hour later while it left the line at 12,000 rpm.Just the facts........as I remember it,it wasn't a new car either.........like something in the mid 70's.

Emerging does mean come out-appear.Hummm-wonder if Webster got that one wrong???. ](*,) #-o :muhaha:

Ford calls this "Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing" or Ti-VCT, and it's featured in many new Ford engines, including the 2011 Mustang, 2011 Edge and Edge Sport, 2011 Lincoln MKX, 2011 Fiesta, 2011 Explorer, and 2012 Focus.

Ti-VCT generates more power and torque (particularly at lower engine RPM), and improves fuel economy (isn't that something you're after, Gary?), reducing emissions to boot.

By using one oil control solenoid valve per camshaft (DOHC), controlled by the Electronic Control Module (ECM), each intake and exhaust cam can be advanced or retarded independently of the other as engine operating conditions change, providing an exceptional degree of valve timing control.

Talk about emerging tech??.Well the electric cars right??.No or very little emissions right??.And guess what is the greatest contributer to emissions??.AAAAA-the old coal power plants. #-o

Doesn't that sound like you can fool some of the people some of the time,But not all of the people all the time??. ](*,)

Guys-some parts of the country did have a direct connection to vehicle emissions, but not all of the country.Yrs ago, cars got bagged and tagged as the reason.Just my two cents worth,it was easy pickings to have the consumer buy and pay for it.

How does that relate to this thread???.Well before you ask that question, here is the answer.WHO pays for that emerging tech??.Not the people who says it is needed.Nope.They just have the ideas about what is good for my poor dumb bass,as I continue to be offended by their ego's and arrogance.I insert here that anytime someone tells me the sky is falling,it is my money they are talking about using to solve their problems because those do gooders can't fund their own agendas.Worse part about it all.Yepper-never even brother to ask me if they could use my money.Real tired of the donkey and apple solutions.

Rant over.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that most "green" legislation is rife with hypocrisy, and designed to line someone's pockets. However, the current system is not sustainable and needs to change. But it's neither the fault of guys like you and me, nor is it in our power to change anything. It's all thanks to the miserable wretches ruling our lives, and I don't believe for a second that they give two sh*ts about our environment.

Truefully,I am all for advancements in designs for performance.I am very lucky to have seen the SBC evolve to levels we never thought was possible. The variable intake runners and can timing is things we just dreamed about.Once that impacks the drag racing sport I have spend over a 1/3 of my life being apart of,I can't even think about how the times will fall.

Electric cars
Most certainly not a new idea. In fact, a century ago there were more electric cars on the road than internal combustion ones. Just over a decade ago, we had successful domestic battery electric vehicles in production. What happened?

I highly encourage everybody to watch "Who Killed The Electric Car?".
You can watch it online HERE or I'm sure you can find it in the video store.

"Our average vehicle on the road is less efficient than it was twenty years ago."

Speaking of snow, they could integrate heater elements into the panels.

Electronic roadways also open the door to some very scary prospects. All the gov't would have to do is stick an RFID chip in everyone's license plate, and then they could track people's whereabouts.
