Oil Pressure

I have a 98 AWD Safari, Yesterday I was driving, for no apparent reason the oil pressure went to zero. The van kept running, I was at a red light, when the light turned green and I pulled off the pressure went back to normal. The same thing happened several times during my trip around the neighborhood. Any Ideas why this would happen, or what the cause is.

Any Ideas would be very helpful.

First as recomended, check oil level. Check oil when the engine is cold, make sure it hasn't lost it's viscosity. When was the last change done? It could be as simple as the sending unit going bad or broken down oil, but it could be worse, oil pump pressure spring or pump problem.

Don't take chances with oil pressure issues or irreversable damage will be the result. If you change the oil and still have issues, put on an aftermarket oil pressure gauge and check what it says.

Good luck.

Sounds like the sending unit is dead. Not sure where it is on the 98, I have never messed with mine.

Its below the distributer, with the pink and brown wires... Kinda hard to see in the picture but it should give you a general idea.

Hey guys thanks for the info. After having the oil changed it seems that was the issue. The van was low on oil. Now of course that has uncovered the next issue, a small leak somewhere. I think I just to drop a new drive train in here. Anybody want to donate a V8 to a needy Van owner! LOL.

Seriously, I will be watching the oil pressure very closely for the next few days to make sure there isnt a bigger problem.

I just did a oil change.I used a Wex oil filter where for lots of yrs I have been a Fram filter customer.I have seen a big differance in oil pressure with this filter. When I get on the gas hard, the oil pressure stays up afterward for a much longer time.I do think it filters better.
