Canoe/Kayak Rack Pics and Canoe Trip Pics from last weekend

Post by WVKayaker »

Here are a couple of pics of my Canoe Rack, a simple solution for those with the factory rack.

1st I attached a piece of 2"x2"x6' treated lumber to the existing roof rack using U bolts. I didn't have a hack saw with me but will trim them next go round. I had these for years and used them on my 1990 Astro. An "L" bracket is attached to the end to help keep the canoes in place while loading.

As in Chevelle Super Sport?
shamefully rotting away in the yard for 10 or 15 years now. Been flooded twice.
It's my friend Randy's and his place on the river. We've seen 3 100 year floods in the last 20 years. Last one made it 2 feet into the second floor...what a mess!

Ohhhhhhhhh, thats nice. That Astro is a nutural born canoe hauler. Did you ford the river in the van? Looked like it but with all those good pics I think I got sensory overload!

Yeah, couldn't help but notice the other Chevy in the bushes. :-k

Dang, this Astro Safari site has more good paddling pictures than http://www.paddling.net .

Man, how am I suppossed to concentrate on work now.

Excellent shots, WVK.

I went in the river too! Wasn't paying attention, spotted a rock and it was too late! Rode up on it, tilted upstream, started to take on water and I abandoned ship before I was totally swamped. Luckily the water was only waist deep. Air temp about 47F, water temp probably 40F...Took us 5.5 hours to go about 15 miles...

Ohp... look again , my Astro van, river paddling, brother: I went ahead and crossed 'er.

I did a thorough investigation by scouting the body of water at hand. Mine, unlike yours, had no real current to speak of, more of an oxbow in the river without the main flowing current. I did walk it first. I thought it would be real easy, and weighed that against the truly unforgiving scenario should anything go wrong, and realized the odds were well in my favor, and let er ride. :muhaha: I made the right decision

It looks to me that you had current, unknown depth, possibility of erroded road, and distance all teamed up against you. You made the right decision.

Cool you made it. This fording was as you say, unknown depth, swift water and I'm a chicken shit!
