That was the best!
Where do you think that was? I once read an article about 4wd vehicles customized in Greenland.
And who thought of lighter fluid to pop a tire back on its bead??

That van is AWESOME!!!! I have also used that procedure to re-seat tires before. It works very well.
As for the van...there is a sticker on the side that says Glacier Expedition and then something after it...hmmmm. Looks like it was probably a Quigley 4x4 conversion. I see a Dana 44 front axle with radius arms and coils.

Re: Fixing a tire on the trail.....
I use that method in my driveway on a regular basis. Usually either when I'm having trouble seating a bead the normal way. or when my can of carb or brake cleaner is closer than the air chuck. Done it on the trail before aswell. A quick spray all the way around the bead area with all the over spray going into the tire and POP on she goes.

Re: Fixing a tire on the trail.....
The first time I ever saw or heard of this method was many many years ago watching a documentariy about a cross antarctic journey. Their tires kept unseating and they didn't have a compressor with enough umph to reseal em and once they were outta spares they just started trying random things till one of em actually put a science degree to good use and bam they came up with doing that.

Over the years I've read and seen pics of these types of vehicles from Iceland. That would be my guess. Here are a few: http://www.4x4offroads.com/4x4-trucks-iceland.htmlds99 wrote: Where do you think that was?
I've noticed all the vehicles have huge flares coving their tires... I recall it being a sticky legal point... It would be nice to get a set for an Astro/Safari!

Re: Fixing a tire on the trail.....
It was filmed in ICELAND about 10 years ago, The motorworld host is Jeremy Clarkson of BBC TV "TopGear" Show.
There is a company doing Glacier Tours using 4x4 vans, Astros, Chevyvans and Econolines (even a 6x6 version).
The vans are a mixture of Pathfinder, & Quigley conversions with quite a lot of local Icelandic input.
Topgear also did a piece about a time trial (they had to try and beat 10 mins) around the Nurnburg Ring Circuit in Germany, In a Diesel Ford Transit van, if you want to see a van kick ass with european sports cars with a Dodge Viper running blocker, this is the one to find, sorry I cannot find a link to it, but I'm sure somebody will.

Lighter fluid? In a spray can? That's got to be starter fluid.
But it sure is a good trick to know. The tire pressure even looked right afterwards.
