temp getting pretty high and it's not even warm out yet..

Post by crash »

yet another issue on the 93 (W) and i'm not really sure what to make of this one.

the full story: the temp gauge never worked when i got the van a couple of years ago. last year finally replaced the coolant temp sensor (old one had a sliced wire) .. ever since, all is well until....

about a month ago the needle started reading higher than 1/2 on the gauge. then the stat would open and the needle would drop down to between 1/4 and half.
now it goes up as high as nearly 3/4 on the gauge before the stat opens and now it only drops down to 1/2 on the gauge.

I changed the leaky heater valve this week.. that was thought to be contributing to the high temps (post found here)while at it I also changed the stat, just incase, burped the system.

still no change on the gauge readings or how hot it's running... up to nearly 3/4 then the stat opens and only drops to 1/2 again.

any ideas?

T'stat.

My 90 would open right at mid-gauge for a long time.
Last 2 months the opening point has climbed up the gauge.

Not to the 3/4 mark but I do notice it.
Once the t'stat opens all is normal.
I was told getting my beauty sleep was a waste of time.

Rub your finger across the FRONT of your fan clutch (closest to the radiator). Can you see or feel a dirt build up by the spring? If so change it.

Look into your radiator filler neck at the tops of the fins, are they plugged and look corroded?

Do you have a fan shroud?

OK, another option.

On my 90, the faster I went the hotter the temp gauge.
80mph (128.74752 Canadian) and the temp in near the red zone.
Slow down and the temp would drop as well.
Hummmmm

Anyway....
A few weeks later the plastic tank burst on the rad.
So, I replaced the rad.

Holy crap .... I could barely see thru the fins of the rad.
Very little air was actually passing thru the fins.
The internals were very clear.
Checked the A/C condenser and it was surprisingly clear.
I thought for sure it would be clogged as well.

Anyway....
The new rad made everything normal again.

thanks WB.. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on this thing. I don't relish dropping the coin on a new rad just after replacing the fuel pump on the 99. especially, considering the 99 still has the same hesitation issues as it did before the pump died.

What temp t-sat are you runing Rob? 180 or 190?

I'm running a 180 t-stat,have a new rad and w.p,no shrouds or oil cooler, My temp gauge will go a little higher than half then when she opens it will drop down to just below half, winter or summer.Only time the temps ever creap up and stay above half,is if I'm stuck in traffic in the summer

W.B may be correct about the rad, have you used compressed air to blow it out? might be worth a shot if you can't get a new rad at the moment, remember without the oil cooler set-up anymore, there wil be slightly more demand on your rad to keep things cool and if that rad is clogged up (either internaly or externally ) those temps will be slightly higher.

If you need a source for good auto -parts I have a buddy I can hook you up with in Woodstock, lmao

the stock stat.. 195

I'll try blowing out the fins and see if that helps at all

also, the temp isn't getting any higher than it already did since the oil cooler delete

Simplest solution is often the one most over-looked.
Ditto on the cleaning of the rad. I use a garden hose and gun on it, usually enuf. Or, the rad's gunked up inside. Keep us apprised...

tonight I started hearing a squealing .... sounds like the water pump or the alternator. both of which are still within warranty because I replaced them within the last year.

question: if the pump ain't pumpin right... that would cause the high temps, yes ??

How does a pump "not pump right"? Unless the impeller is loose on the shaft.... :-k
