is this a transmission problem or normal?

the hesitation problem that I am and have been experiencing has been going on since probably january or february. i'm sure most of you are sick of hearing about it. (i'm updating that thread when i'm finished posting this thead).

I thought about it today and realized that just before the 1-2 shift and just before the 2-3 shift was when my hesitation usually occured. Worse when wet or very damp outside. I decided to manually shift into 2nd and drive at a low speed on my friends street to see if I could get the hesitation to occur again today (dry last two days). when i got to my friends place and pulled into his driveway I tapped the pedal and it seemed to rev but not really go. I tried the tapping of the pedal in 1st gear... similar but not as bad. 3rd gear fine and Drive was fine. I thought it was a fluke and tried this 2nd gear gas pedal tape 4 more times and all had the same results. revving but not really pulling. like there was no "go". almost like what a manual trans does when you'd try starting off in 2nd or 3rd.... only without the shuddering. there was no shudder.

my trans fluid and filter was changed approx a year ago and I've never towed and only done maybe 10,000kms in that year (around 7500 miles or less even) level was down a little bit, not enough to add any.

is this 2nd gear thing normal or am I having abnormal problems?

I did a quick search and found that there are electronic control solenoids

this is one: 1 - 2, 2 - 3 Shift Solenoid,w/ 4 Speed Trans. (there are two, replace as req'd)
this is another: Pressure Control Solenoid,w/ 4 Speed Trans
this is another: 3-2 Shift Solenoid,w/ 4 Speed Trans

these are others: TCC PWM Solenoid and a TCC Solenoid,w/ 4 Speed Trans.

what do they all do .. and are these things IN or ON the transmission? how would I know what I need to replace.. if i have a problem? either way it sounds like it's going to get expensive.

The first thing I would do is get it scanned for transmission codes. It could be setting codes but not turning on the light because the problem is not severe. Example: My 02 Grand Prix has a bad pressure control soleniod, makes it shift hard when it warms up. It set a code, but compensates by commanding max pressure to the trans because it cannot control the pressure. It doesn't turn the light on because it is still driveable. A quality scanner will show the parimeters of the solenoids and allow you to watch them work (or not work) and allow you to command them on and off. Holding a mechanics stethescope to the trans pan and commanding them on and off one by one you will hear them click (or not.) If you don't have access to a scanner then having it diagnosed by a shop is the other option.

In 1st gear, the van should move instantly when you push the throttle, especially if you are already moving. In 2nd, it may bog a little if you are going slow enough because in 2nd (on the column) the tranny stays in 2nd gear and does not shift down into 1st. It really shouldn't rev up much without moving.

that's exactly what it's doing.

any vehicle that I've had in the past 1st was 1st. 2nd meant that it would start out in 1st and shift only as high as 2nd. same for 3rd, starting in 1st going to 2nd and not higher than 3rd.
