There is a tool for removing the pump. But I have never used one.
Remove the 8 bolts holding the pump on. Take a big screwdriver and place in between the pump and the front drum through the opening at the front of the valve body. Pry between the drum and pump to loosen the pump and remove. Be careful not to bend sh*t. The first pic shows the opening and the drum to the right of my hand.

Why are you removing your pump?

to replace or rebuild it its not pumping fluid the torque converter popped out when i reinstalled it and i didn't catch it at first so you probably know what happened from therei have no drive no nothing now this happened to me once before on another astro and thats all we replaced so i have a spare that i'm throwing in it to get me going again now once you take all the bolts out is there anything else that comes out to release it

Just the 8 bolts holding it in. Make sure you remove the filter.

I think you will also have to remove the white plastic electronic switch...maybe the TCC?...or else you will break it. You get to it from inside the pan. Make sure you have the trans standing upright, or you will have probs reinstalling the pump. Make sure the sealing rings on the pump support are not overlapping themselves, or you will have other trans problems. Also, as you found out, make sure the torque converter is installed ALL the way into the pump, or you will be doing it again! The TC mounting pads should sit approximately 3/4 to 1" inside the housing. You should also not be able to fit your fingers between the converter and front of the pump.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

My guess is that the seals are hanging up on you. The two blue ones hang up a bit if they are not compressed well and lube the crap out of them with vasaline. Do the same to the rubber ring seal around the pump body.

either that or the pump is slightly cocked in the bell housing. I managed to do this and had a helluva time getting it back out to re-seat it.

Here's a handy tip. Get two bolts of the proper thread size. They should be about three inches long. Cut the heads off. Install them opposite each other in the pump bore and use them as a guide. The trans should be verticle to have everything line up properly. \:D/

I really hate 'guessing' what's wrong with something if I can't see it. But I would really have to believe that something inside the trans got torqued when the pump had to be press fit on. I have never heard of anyone press fitting a pump onto a 700R4/4L60E. They should just slide in. I would tell you to pull the pump back off and look for any damage. Also, see if the assembly spins after you remove the pump. Let us know.
