I was looking at getting a billet shifter.......how does one go about taking off the factory one and replacing?

The quickest and easiest way would be to just knock the pin out of the handle and then pull the handle out of the steering column. Then disconnect the linkage from the lower end of the column and you're done! Of course, this will leave you with the nub on the column where the handle was.

The really nice way would be to take the column apart and remove all the parts related to the shifter. But to get rid of that nub, you'll need to replace that part of the column with that piece from a 5speed van, because it would not have the shifter up there anyway.

Oh, I thought you were going to install a billet floor shifter. My mistake.
You will need to take the column apart. You'll need a steering wheel puller and a steering lock plate puller. Beyond that I don't know the exact procedure but I don't think it would be very difficult.

Hopefully someone else will be able to offer some more specific guidance.

The stalk is held in place by a single torx bolt hidden by the rubber shifting boot. Should be an easy swap.

so this will be inside the steering column? and i'd have to take off the steering wheel to access it correct?

I must be missing something here. Wouldn't you just knock out the pin, remove the old handle, insert the new handle and push the pin back in? No reason to operate on the steering column internally?
