Liberty's Trans Problem

Wife's Jeep clunked and decided that 3rd and 4th were no longer available and set code P0733 3rd gear RPMs incorrect for gear.

Took it to a shop for further diagnostics, they suggest rebuild for $2700. Honestly we just don't have that kind of money.

I've found a 2002 trans w/ 28K miles for $325 using car-part.com located NE of Indianapolis. The shop would want $1200 do to the swap. Still way above my happy range. I'm sure I can do the swap, but my wife is nervous because she's heard of others swapping JY trans and having to do it again relatively soon and wants the shop to do the swap. Tried to explain that it's what inside the trans, not the swap that causes the failure.

Currently my ideal is to swap the trans and rebuild the original myself, and store it for when/if the replacement breaks.

What do you all think?

sounds like a plan. It will take the time pressure off the rebuild.

New development, could the repair be as simple as upgrading the accumulator plate on the valve body. Internet research says yes.

I know, but the shop has been cool so far. They're not charging us for their quick diagnosis.

3 times! Dude, that sucks. Is the same shop doing warranty work after the first one? How long have they been in business? From what I understand the 700R4/4L60E is pretty much a staple of trans shops and usually the first one people learn to rebuild. Maybe they keep giving you the new guy.

I don't know jack about jeep transmissions, but if the 3-4 accumulator is remotely similar to the accumalators on the 700R4, something as simple as a broken spring will cause a no shift problem.
My 1-2 accumulator spring broke and it wouldn't even shift into first gear - burned the forward clutches.

The Jeep is fixed. The problem was a blown accumulator plate. Repaired/upgraded with a Transgo Shift Kit.

Total spent, just under $110. Nothing added to the charge cards. :supz:
