I have a '96 and am wondering if replacing the chip in the computer will get me better gas mileage? If so, how much more? will this put additional stress on the engine?

Most chips are about wringing more power out of the engine. Jet Performance DST shows that it can tune for mileage, but that list 1998 and newer vehicles. You might call and see if it will do anything for your 1996. But it's a $475 hit while gas prices are dropping.

1996 and newer are OBD-2 and you can not replace a simple chip. You have to use a programmer like the Jet or Hypertech. I am not sure you will see enough appreciable fuel mileage gains to pay for the upgrade.
