Any EV Astro or Safari?

Post by 2002Safari »

Has anyone considered EV powering their van?

How about using a van instead of a Datsun?

I bet Peter's van can't bet this Datsun.

amazing the torque that an electric motor will produce
'89 Astro, 4.3L, TBI. Minor intake and exhaust mods. Rebuilt 700R4 trans (by me). Corvette servo, 0.5" boost valve, police grade 1-2 accumulator spring (shifts fast and solid). B&M stacked plate trans cooler. Bilstein shocks. Belltech sway bars front and back. New head unit, speakers and subwoofer. Needs paint and a new headliner.

Just in dreaming mode:

Imagine no transmission, engine, transfer case giving a drop of some1k pounds?

Put NMh batteries where the gas tank is - perhaps several sets.

Put a motor on each wheel.

I wonder how many miles one could drive before needing a recharge.

Would we have a winner?

Ah, the dreams! where is all this going to take us? I would love to have say 800 mile drive range electric before recharge.

2002, lets keep going,no muffler,no radiator, brakes would last 3to 4 times as long-regenerative braking and no drive train vibration. One motor on each rear wheel would be sufficient and so would be a 250 to 300 mile range with a standardized battery pack which could be exchanged in 10 to 15 minutes-after 5 hr driving you need a rest. Each house on a major street could be a exchange station if the owner would like to invest in some battery modules. And one more thing no oil changes and no more grease monkeys to rip of the public.I no some one else will keep on going with there ideas.

get the gear out of one of these
http://www.teslamotors.com/
it has almost enough range for my weekly commute on one charge.
it's a little slow though...only 0-60 in 3.9  :muhaha:

Wouldn't it be nice to own a van you could actually talk to the people in the rear seat at freeway speeds!

And 0 - 60 in 3.9 seconds. What a sweet van this would become.

Could even put photo cells on the roof for battery recharge.

Shall we dream on.

uhm... it's not so easy to sync motors on each wheel would be easier to keep the transmission and get one large motor to drive it they even have adapter plates for vehicles that had Chevy small block V8 and 4.3litre V6's they even have a kit for s10's check out this site for more info (ive been really intrested in building an electric awd stro) http://www.canev.com/

Shelby Sports Cars is now into the act:
http://www.gizmag.com/ultimate-aero-ev- ... car/10853/

1k HP and 2.5 0 - 60 makes other powered vehicles look rather sick.

For many of us, EV's look our of our price range. But then again so did my Safari a few years ago.

I actually have a business researching and developing tech for alternative fuels.. my van will very soon be a hybrid setup of gasoline and another developmental fuel we are working on.. if things work out I will def tell more, but I did want to point out one thing.. you forgot to account for the weight ADDED by the battery packs and electric motor.. I doubt it would be the same as what was lost, but it is still there! One way to determine from the Tesla would be to compare its curb weight to that of the lotus it is based on.. With that said, dont forget to subtract the weight of all your fluids!! Think about how much is INSIDE the gas tank, oil, trans fluid, ect!

people recommend again using awd for the same reason the added weight but i like being different. i came out to about 10 pounds over stock weight but i had double the standard number of cells :muhaha:

Has anyone ever seen this conversion book?

I would wonder at the conversion price he's stating.

Until the prices of batteries comes down a lot and charge times drop to 10-15 minute, I won't bother with a big vehicle. I have thought about building an electric bicycle, but I'll most likely end up with one of the 50cc 2 stroke kits.
