Not so Newbie

Post by FireVan »

Greetings, I use to live here (old site?) a few years back. Some of you may remember me as Safari4WD or Steve from Overland Vans. Even though I sold Overland to Dan and have been away from the van forums for a few years I have never been without a lifted van. They continue to be the most usefull vehicle. I find myself building yet another van.

This time it's for the fire service as my First Response rig. It will also be used as a fire prevention education vehicle and as an auxillary light rescue unit. It is a '98 AWD (Red) with a G80 rear. I bought it out of Oklahoma (rustfree) with 55K on it. Just got started setting it up but I am excited about the project. Here is a before shot and one after I removed all the body trim (ick) and started lifting it. Front end still needs another inch and I have to remove all the sticky 3m tape from the trim.

Once the lift is done I will install some 31x10.50 AT tires on 15x8 A/R Baja rims. I need to locate some base/cargo model fender trims to fill the void left from removing the cladding. I will then Rhinoline the rockers and flares in gloss black. Then it will get a white 2" reflective stripe down both sides and across the back just above the Rhinolining. I also want to build a HD bumper/grill guard for the front mostly for the high speed deer encounters. After that comes all the lights and sirens and the interior mods. Hope to finish it up soon but you know how that goes.

Here are a few of the other vans I have built/owned through the years.

Welcome(back) Steve. I can't wait to see how your van turns out. I'm not sure what you mean by fender trims? I like the look of the van with the cladding removal in the rear. Would I have to repaint if I do that, or can I just clean it up?

The white '96 looks awesome.

I am a firefighter/medical first responder that is on call 24/7. When something goes down I volunteer to drop everything and respond either direct to the incident or to the station to grab a fire/rescue truck depending on the nature of the call and location. I receive some compensation from the township for the actual time on a response or for the hours spent maintaining the trucks and equipment but your typical kid flipping burgers makes more in a month than I do. I do it because I love it. That is what this van is all about. To make me better at what i do so I can help more people.

Piggy is a good word for it. It is held on with 3m tape over nice clean paint. There are a few plastic push clips along the bottom of the rockers that pop out with small screwdriver. There are also a few screws but they are mostly under the fender lip. Removing that sticky 3m tape is the worst part. I still have alot of that to remove.

That is correct. The ones that are on the base or cargo model.

When the cladding on Blue was coming unstuck I took it to a local body shop, they reapplied it while I waited. To clean the old sticky crap off they used 3M Adhesive Remover 6041.

Mine will be two-tone just without the cladding. It will be like on my white '96. The lower part and wheel arch will be a gloss or satin black bed liner. The cladding to me makes them seem too domestic and I like the utility look better. I'm not saying they don't look nice, I'm just saying that it doesn't fit me.
