my van actually did this once, it didnt matter what it said it was in it just randomly chose to do what it wanted and was forever changing, sometimes p was r, sometimes 1 was p, sometimes n was r and so on. it ended up just being an electrical glitch my freind who is a tranny specialist reset my computer free of charge and its been fine ever since.

If that's the case, maybe disconnecting the battery for a coupla minutes might fix it?

i would check the range switch, or the shift cable to see if it's faulty or misadjusted according to the manual, these are the external controls:

External Controls
The transaxle external control system consists of the following components:

shift cable and bracket
park range switch (part of gearshift lever)
shift lock actuator
gearshift lever
The gearshift lever controls the transaxle gear selection through the shift cable. The cable detent and gearshift lever position locking is controlled by the gearshift lever knob.

Shift Interlock System

The shift interlock system prevents the gearshift lever from being moved out of the PARK (P) position. The ignition switch must be in the ON position and the brake pedal depressed to move the gearshift lever out of the PARK (P) position. The brake pedal position is detected by the brake pedal position (BPP) switch.

The manual override button will mechanically bypass the electronic portion of the shift interlock system and allow the gearshift lever to be moved out of the PARK (P) position. The manual override button is part of the gearshift lever assembly.

it also says:
Concern:
The shift control is out of correct gear relationship

Possible Sources:
Shift cable adjustment.
Shift cable and bracket.
Shift control linkage.

hope this helps...make sure no soda or liquid has been spilled on the shifter either, we've seen that happen on some vehicles before...

Hmmm....

FWD car based Escape or RWD truck based Blazer, no contest for me the Blazer wins.

The Escape is now paid for...fix it and keep driving it. If it gets to where maintenance is more than a payment for a new one, then trade it! With the economy the way it is, I would fix it as long as it isn't too expensive.

I agree with Dean, keep it and get it fixed. While I had two blazers, it will required maintenace too. They are horrible for ball joints ( at least my 4x4's were) and that one will be needing a fuel pump in next 20-40K miles @ at least $300 do it yourself.

Yesterday i got my girlfriend out of the Ford, I got her a 2002 Grand Prix SE with the 3.1 V6. It has 105k, I got it for $2,000. Are the 3.1's good engines? Anythings better than a Ford i suppose.

My buddy has my old 95 Lumina with the 3.1. Well over 200K on the engine and still runs nice. The trans had to be done twice during this time.
