Ring and Pinion Specs

Hey Guys,

It's been a long while since I've been around here. Good to scan through a bit and see what's up.

I have a question.
I'm fixing to swap in some 4.10 gears in place of my 3.73's. Does someone know what the proper specs are and a good place to buy the gears, bearings, and seals?

Do I need to replace bearings when replacing gears?

Thanks in advance. :)

You do not need to replace the bearings, but a thorough inspection is definatly reccomended, In my opinion it is worth spending the $200 on the bearings to ensure you are not going to have a problem 6 months down the line.

I have made a few purchases from Ron's Machining service threw E-bay for Toyota Gears and ARB Lockers.

Good prices, fast shiping, and helpfull service.

I dont know what his GM prices are like but I am sure they are competitive.

Yukon gear has a great gear setup manual that gives specs and instructions. I have bought from Complete Off Road before and their service and speed was awesome. They also will do a better deal if you buy front and rear sets from them. They have great prices and the Yukon gears are very well made. I have been very happy with the Yukons.

yukongear you say? I've got a bug to put 3.73s in my 2wd. Thought I'd gotten over it when I sat down and gritted my teeth for about 20 minutes, but it keeps coming back. I was thinking about new gears on the way home tonight and I find this thread. does it for me...a recommendation from mr. differential himself.

oh, Dean..saw your new sig...I"m running my a/c right now..he he he he :poke:

I've heard of lapping the ring and pinion.

Do any manufacturers do that or is this what is happening in 'the breakin' period and thus the oil change after 500 miles? :-k

From what I have read, they lap them in when the set is made at the factory. That is why you must use the ring and pinion as a set and you can't mix 'n match. They still need the 500 mile break-in period.

This is one of those things I read the instructions for, and realize I would love to learn how to do it both because I want to go up to 3.73 or 4.10 on the van to help with towing, but also just to know how to do it. At the same time it makes me realize I need someone who knows what they are doing and has all the tools (I have some but not all) that are needed to walk through it with me. Ah well, I have brakes and some other stuff to do first.

BCSUVan,
I wished we lived closer, I'd take the 3.73 gears off your hands and we could swap both at the same time, learning as we go.
