Humpty Dumpty Engine swap

Post by afsigma21 »

This is a starting point for the posting of my engine swap.

Pictures of the parts to swap on the long block
Picture from where it has been parked for the last 6 months. My daughter and her friends drove it partying on her 22nd birthday. It had fun, but the rod has broken loose from the crank it it most likely spun a bearing.
Engine bay photos, all Pre swap.

Are you planning on pulling it through the front? or dropping the subframe?

If your motor has thrown a rod, your whole lower block is JUNK .....! (because a busted rod thrashing around just for a few seconds will trash everything.) Pull off the oilpan to confirm, but it is V8 time for you dude....

We would all love to see the graphic debris pictures....

Will your motor spin over? Or will it just make an horrendous (sp?) noise....?

If it is an `94 or later, you can cut the rad support and pull the motor out the front, rather than dropping it down from underneath.

Keep intouch with us.

It is a 97 and it runs, but makes horendous noise, L O U D.

I am honestly not 100% sure, but I tried to repeat what AJ the mechanic said. He is a friend of a friend so I think what he said is reasonable. Especially from the metal sparlies in the oil and the noise. Plus my dad agreed, and my dad always seems o know a hell of a lot more than I ever gave him gredit for. He's in his 60's and seems to have done it all!

I do not know how AJ is going to pull the motor out for sure, but he did not think it would be a problem.

I dont relly want to go v8, it seems too much for me. The whole motor and all the new accessories was less than $2k and swap is not very expensive.

Hopefully this will start in the next couple days.

Oh, it still runs....? but with a loud knock. When you said a broken rod, I was thinkin` five cylinders with one rod thrashing around in-there....

ya,"broken rod" does kind of bring pictures of holes in a block....

and not to be smart (but I will) when I first saw the pics with the new items for the van,I smiled and chuckled a little, thinking ;"He has no idea!".....,

When I had to do the engine on mine,I cut the upper radiator supports and pulled it out through the front.
Of course having a lift in the vehicle made this so much easier for accessing tranny bolts and working around the top of the engine.

keep us informed ....and sounds like AJ is a good friend .....

Good luck with the swap. Be warned, once you do the swap with the V6 you may catch the V8 bug!

Engine is out, it was taken out the front with the radiator supports cut.

There were "chunks" that came out when the oil was drained, I will get pictures of the carnage in a couple days when the old oil pan is pulled off and pictured.
