Comment for the nerds

Post by Cobra »

Ok so i'm a nerd and i know it but anyways
I have a Raid 1 array set up on my computer and people said that there is absolutly no reason for me to have it. Well today i proved them wrong one of my drives had a major error, to the point that it was unreadable thanks to my raid arrray i didn't lose the 900gigs of data \:D/
i know there is no reason why i needed to post this but i'm just happy becuase i didn't lose anything and that the people who said it wasn't useful to me were wrong (tho i wish it wasn't neccesary)

Our Sequel and Server computers at work use Raid controllers to mirror the many hard drives. We have had many failures over the years and the systems keep on chugging along like nothing is wrong.

You know...this IS a totally useless thread! :muhaha:

Cobra, just the fact that you're posting this info in an automotive forum makes you an even bigger nerd........ #-o

You make that sound like it is a bad thing.

Geeks & nerds (I consider myself the former) have their place. Just like Bubba, Zeke & Earl have theirs.

I'd love to see Bubba (and we all know "Bubba") program a computer or PLC.

Not too many nerds know how to expertly handle a welder, but a soldering iron might be ok.

I guess what I'm getting at is, can't we all just get along? =D>

Nice work with the RAID save.... I want to get a DLink NAS box - probably just the DNS-323 and a couple of 1 Terabyte drives. However currently I am using Windows Live Sync to automatically back up my photos and music folders between my various computers. Between the 3 I shouldn't lose anything. Just thought I'd mention Windows Live Sync because it is a easy option for ensuring data integrity - if you have valuable photo's or other files I encourage people to look into this option. Please also remember the 25GB available on your "Skydrive" that comes along with your windows live ID. Love live geeks, and nerds. :supz: I rebuild computers for friends for bottles of booze.... seems better than charging what it is really worth!

I am glad you mentioned the Skydrive option, I've been backing up my photo collection there for the past little while, it takes a little while but for the free 25 gb's I really can't complain and I like the fact I can access those pics anywhere.

i have a computer just for network storage all my photos, music and random goods are on it i was looking at getting the seagate NAS box but to pricey for me right now. for some reason i don't like the idea of all my photos on someone elses server, but the idea of access from anywhere is nice :-k

I had taken it in jest and thought I was giving back as such.

You "Nerds" and "Geeks" drive me nuts. But I'm sure glad you're with us. My best friend of 30 years was a NASA tech. Many times I had to stop him in mid sentence and say "You're going to have to dummy that down so I can have a clue what you're talking about". He unfortunately is no longer with us. I miss him everyday.

Dude why the nerd?

Use geek ...... Nerd is almost an insult. A guy with a RAID should know this! :-s

:D i haven't had to recover using mine yet but considering the massive collection of movies/music I have spent years collecting I felt it pertinent enough to protect it. Really it comes down to Value. If the Data isn't of enough value to justify the costs associated with protecting it then don't do it. But if the data is of value then the $50 for the HDD and the time to set everything up is well worth it.
