What to pull from a 1997 AWD Astro?

Post by slim724 »

My coworker has a 97 he blew the engine in, and is giving it to the local scrap yard, he said I can come by and pull anything I want off of it, can any of you school me on any items that I should get from it that are hard to find and or discontinued?

With his being an AWD and yours a RWD you can forget driveline stuff ( other than the rear diff )

Maybe, Alternator, starter, Battery, EGR, coil, tires, interior seating, it of course all depends if this stuff is newer or in better shape than what you already have.

I agree with the V8 comment. I hate to see an Astro, especially an AWD go to the scrappers. When they're gone, they're gone. Shame he couldn't sell it to an enthusiast cheap instead.

I guess I'd pull the front subframe, lol. Stick it under your 99 and have an AWD.

Anyway,

Last year a friend of mine was in the same shape with a 1987 Monte Carlo. I traded him another vehicle (my wrecked and stripped 86 Astro, loaded with metal and junk) so that I could save the car for a future project.

If it's in nice shape I'd give him the scrap price, put another motor in it and sell it. That's a money maker. The last one I did I made $2000 when it was done. \:D/

I agree 10000000%. Up here in the north we would give our right testi...well maybe not that much but we would give a lot to be able to grab a rust-free CA van with a blown engine for scrap price.

Believe me, I wish I could just grab it for a High-Lift V8 project but there is no way my wife would let me have it here, we already have 3 working vehicles and only a 2 car garage as it is, I also hate to see it go to the scrapyard, he'll probably get $200 for it tops, he said the interior/exterior is nice, just the engine is blown, any of you could come down here to San Jose, California and have it for probably $150 cash, no joke! I'm going to check it out this Sunday and probably start pulling parts I guess

Just thinking out loud...what would shipping that van to central NY cost? I still have a spare 97 4.3L sitting in storage. :-k

I'd put it on CraigsList. Good chance someone will pay more than junkyard money for it and do the engine swap.

You guys from rust country would die seeing all the nice vans in my local junkyards, it's because of the clunkers program, all the nice ones have clunker written large in white shoe polish across the back window, they get violently picked apart within a few days then off to the crusher, one I was picking from last week got crushed and there was still a ton of good stuff on it

I am surprised no one mentioned to check for the G80 in the back?
Does it have the rear heater? Grab that too :)
