Legend has it that there was a Quigley employee who converted his own Astro van with Quigley based parts. I've seen it in the back ground of Moab pics, but thats all I've ever seen or heard of it.

I've been thinking about what to get after rust completely eats my Astro. Chevy offers AWD on the Express 1500 van, and it has a 43.4' turning circle (stock Astro: 43.8', Ford E-series: 48.6'). It loses points big time for not having a slider though. I haven't been able to find out the type of transfer case, suspension, or if you can get a limited slip differential.

Or I could just get a 2005 Astro with low miles I love how compact and maneuverable it is!

Rust? I'm 45 minutes south of you and we don't get any rust on the vehicles. Do they salt in Vancouver? My '03 doesn't have a speck of rust on it.

I was looking to buy an '02 Silverado, ("immaculate" he says- it was far from immaculate) so we put it up on my brother in laws hoist and the first thing he says is that its an out of state vehicle because of how rusty the whole undercarriage is. Next.


And I'm liking the Chev vans more and more. And the model that was in your video looks better than the newer Chevs. I think the IFS is beefy enough for the overlanding that I do and its so smooth on the worst FS roads. All my buddies comment on how its the best riding lifted 4x4 they've ever been in.

I'm amazed at the turning radius of the fullsize... I've always been very impressed with the turning radius of my Safari!

I was just reading an issue of 'Vintage Trucks' and there was an old Ford with a Marmon-Herrington 4x4 conversion. I knew they used to convert domestic trucks before the domestics offered factory 4x4s. I didn't realize they were still in business though.

Salt like crazy. Last winter was especially bad. Before, I didn't have any visible rust, just in a few little nooks and crannies. Now it is beginning to show. And the subframe looks a lot more orange. It's also partly because the paint is in rough shape. I think clearcoat was pretty thin when I bought it, and I finished it off driving through bushes and trees.

I know. My father has a Ford E350, and it comes with some kind of heavy duty suspension with radius arms I think, but it definitely doesn't ride as nice as a Chev. Fords in general I think don't steer as well. The guy at my alignment shop said he preferred the handling of a Chev too.

Agreed. My Astro turns better than my old sedan! I can parallel park into any tight spot. I was shocked when I read the Express, with its longer wheel base, turns tighter than the Astro. It must have a wider steering range lock-to-lock. It also has rack-and-pinion steering, so you might get better road feel on paved roads, but it's going to feel rougher off-road. At least no idler arms right?

I hate the huge bubbly dashboards, but the interior looks like they took it right out of my Astro!
