I need tog et a new alt for my 87 safari.

Autozone has a new Gold Duralast Limited Lifetime warranty Notes: 100 Amp * With A/C * Designed for maximum durability 100% new for $120

or a

Remand Duralast Limited Lifetime Warranty: Notes: 105 Amp * With A/C * Premium reman for $95

Is it worth it to spent the extra $25 for the "new" part?

these prices are comparable to Advance and O'riellys, but I think AZ has the best price for a 105 amp alt (the second one listed above)

I'd much rather the 105 amp over the 100 amp. These vans suck down the trons.

Or you could fit a 140 amp from a Caprice Cop Car, but it might need some mounting mods....

MSD make some excellent high amp alternators.
The RCMP use them in there cruisers and I have used them in a few vehicals of my own without any issues.
They bolt and plug right in. Plug and play.

Every Duralast part/tool I've ever bought or seen was pretty junky.

Look into the AD244 alternators from newer Tahoe's, Suburbans, and trucks like that. Supposedly should be a direct drop in with out any (or too much) modifications. They also come with higher amperage ratings (145amps if I remember right).

You can also search motorcityreman on Ebay. I've seen him sell stock amperage alternators for less than $100.

i got the 105 amp Duralast, cause I needed it like..right now...open the box to find its a Delco Remy...

i had to take the dog house off to get to the bolt on the back. getting the old one out was a little bit harder than getting the new one in. I'm almost done but since i have the dog house off, i'm going to replace the air filter, so i'm running up to the store.

and done.

I love working on my vans....on my terms. Mods and enhancements are kewl, maintenance and repair (especially in the winter) sux.

When you do these upgrades, do you replace the cable with a larger one?

140 amps should be carried by a 6 gauge cable on a short run IIRC.

Then there's the fuse or link issue.

I just went through this on my 1999 when I put in the CS144 (I know you're not a fan of this alt, but I had it so I thought I'd try it, so far, so good).

I'm just wondering how you do it, not being critical, I struggled a bit with it.

I have nothing against the CS144. It's larger than the CS130 and is able to output higher amperage and stay cooler.

When you do the upgrades you don't have to replace the factory wires, but, you should do the big 3 upgrade. You actually just add the new wiring and be done with it.

As always, the shorter the run the better and the bigger the wire the better (less resistance).

and asked about output choices. Told them that my van tends
to idle around 600 RPM and that most of my driving is at
low RPMs. They recommended AGAINST the 200A model
as it is designed to begin output at a higher RPM.

The 160A model is a direct drop in, same diameter, bolt holes etc.

Despite their name (Reman), it's 100% new. Guaranteed for life.
Gettin' out the hammer crimper and the BIG cables and heat shrink
as soon as temps drop below 105 here in Phoenix.

I'm ok working in the heat. But my camera viewfinder
