whining sound when in gear

hey guys.. it's always had this sound since I got it (on the 99). assumed it was normal. lately, either it's starting to bother me or getting louder, one of the two.

in P no whine, in any of the forward gears I have it, and in reverse I have it. N - not so much

any ideas what this might be? this is in gear NOT moving. I mean it also has it when moving but I wanted to clarify that it's not any worse while moving. just with foot on brake in gear.

ideas? .. it almost sounds like a pump when it first starts to whine. trans fluid doesn't smell burnt, it is a tad less red in color and more transparent than normal, I think

thanks
Rob

I wouldn't worry too much. The pump can whine for a very long time before anything bad happens. The only remedy is to replace it.

That is correct. Most of the work in changing it is in removing and replacing the transmission.

LOL.. well is the pump a common problem? i've never heard of it going before, meaning never seen any posts on it.

would a fluid/filter change help at all ??

No, not common but it does happen. As with every mechanical devise there is a point when it wears out. Changing the fluid and filter never hurt a transmission but in this case it wont cure a mechanical problem.

I had the exact same symptoms after I rebuilt a transmission in my van once. Turned out to be the torque converter. Only made the noise under load. Park and Neutral were normal. I would think the pump would make the noise in all selections.

Hm I wonder if that's the cause of my whining too. If it was this pump, would the whine be louder going uphill, and in a turn?

so, in your opinion, is this something that one could just live with? would any type of additive help?

very good point about the pump pumping in all selections :-k i am low on the knowledge about transmissions 8-[
