At wits end with 2000 Astro

Post by SpyAstro »

I hope someone can help.
I have a 2000 Astro with a replacement motor. I'm not sure of the year of the engine, the PO didn't know.
The van had starting problems , it would just crank and crank. Once it caught it ran like silk. I replaced the fuel filter and battery and the problem was solve for a month or so.
It did the same thing cranking and cranking.
So far I've replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, crank positioning sensor, fuel pump relay, and oil pressure switch.
The van just sits there cranking. Sometimes it sounds like its going to catch but nope.
The fuel pump whirrs on and when I pressed the schrader valve the gas shot out and hit the drivers side head rest.
I'm going insane. I've got fuel and spark so what gives. I ready to drop a match and run.
Can anyone out there help.
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Have you measured your fuel pressure yet?

Lots of fuel will shoot out even if the pressure is too low to spray out the poppets in the engine. Get it measured.

Does it happen in all weather, or only when damp/wet?

Pull the doghouse off in the evening when its darker in the van, look for any sparks shorting out against the engine.

If it is fuel pump related, You may be able to start it with a shot of starting fluid as you crank the starter.

Give that a shot and keep us posted.

Thanks for the input so far. Any way to determine fuel pressure without the tester? Its not in the budget right now. I know its only $40 but its just not there for a couple of days.
Is there anyone out there willing to talk on the phone? I won't take up to much time. I'm just a lousy typist and it's taking forever this way. My email is the9c1@yahoo.com if anyone can talk for a few. I really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Brian

Hey Everyone,
I just picked up the fuel pump and I'm heading out in a few to do my first replacement.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that sent some help my way.
Thanks Aaron for taking some time to talk on the phone, I really appreciate it.
I'll post after I replace the pump and the monster finally starts.
Now if I can just find a way to keep Murphy occupied till it starts. :muhaha:
