He fell out of the ship

The cruise ship captain says he didn't abandon the ship but he tripped and fell into a lifeboat. This seems like a good one to add to the book of excuses er reasons.

You have to wonder what goes through these people's heads when they do stuff like this. It's just sad that innocent people had to die because of a ridiculous move like that.

Even if he did just fall into the lifeboat, did he also fall on the ropes, ignition switch and throttle lever (if gas) and just miraculously cruise right up to the shore, unconscious?

In the mid sixties the American cruise industry suffered a terrible disaster. An old converted troop ship called the Yarmouth Castle was on a cruise to the Bahamas when it caught fire and 91 people died. It was a terrible scandal, the sprinklers didn't work and the public address system failed. And the captain, it was alleged, jumped into one of the first of the lifeboats with four other passengers and sped off into the night. He later claimed that he was going to get help.

I understand that the show dancer he was having dinner with was in charge of going down on his ship instead of him that day.
